The papers in this volume were presented at the 50th Annual Conference on African Linguistics held at the University of British Columbia in 2019. The contributions span a range of theoretical topics as well as topics in descriptive and applied linguistics. The papers reflect the typological and genetic diversity of languages in Africa and also represent the breadth of the ACAL community, with papers from both students and more senior scholars, based in North America and beyond. They thus provide a snapshot on current research in African linguistics, from multiple perspectives. To mark the 50th anniversary of the conference, the volume editors reminisce, in the introductory chapter, about their memorable ACALs.

Health care HVAC systems serve facilities in which the population is uniquely vulnerable and exposed to an elevated risk of health, fire, and safety hazard. These heavily regulated, high-stakes facilities undergo continuous maintenance, verification, inspection, and recertification, typically operate 24/7, and are owner occupied for long life. The HVAC systems in health care facilities must be carefully designed to be installed, operated and maintained in coordination with specialized buildings services, including emergency and normal power, plumbing and medical gas systems, automatic transport, fire protections and a myriad of IT systems, all within a limited building envelope.

What is a «good life» and how can it be achieved? In this volume, communication scholars and media experts explore these fundamental questions about human existence and aspiration in terms of what a «good life» might look like in a contemporary, mediatized society. While in many ways a mediatized society brings us closer to some version of the «good life», it also leads us away from it. The affordances of new technologies seem to have shifted, for many, from an opportunity to an obligation. Rather than choosing when and where to be connected to these larger networks of information and acquaintances, we feel we must be permanently available, thus losing the luxury of controlling our time and attention. This volume illuminates the complexity of our modern era, exploring how society can leverage exciting new opportunities whilst recognizing the complex challenges we face in a time of constant change. It helps us understand how we have come to this point and where we may be going so that we may study the opportunities and the dangers, the chances and the risks, that digital media pose in our quest for some version of «the good life».

The articles here also reflect the many different research perspectives that frame the work of linguists in the Association for Contemporary African Linguistics. The diversity of views presented in this volume are thus indicative of the vitality of current African linguistics research. The work presented in this volume represents both descriptive and theoretical methodologies and covers fields ranging from phonetics, phonology, morphology, typology, syntax, and semantics to sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language acquisition, computational linguistics and beyond. This book contains selected papers from the symposium "Operations Research 2010" which was held from September 1-3, 2010 at the "Universität der Bundeswehr München", Germany. The international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted more than 600 participants from more than thirty countries. The general theme "Mastering Complexity" focusses on a natural component of the globalization process. Financial markets, traffic systems, network topologies and, last but not least, energy resource management, all contain complex behaviour and economic interdependencies which necessitate a scientific solution. Operations Research is one of the key instruments to model, simulate and analyze such systems. In the process of developing optimal solutions, suitable heuristics and efficient procedures are some of the challenges which are discussed in this volume.

This book contains expanded versions of research papers presented at the international sessions of Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI), which was held online in June 2020. The JSAI annual conferences are considered key events for our organization, and the international sessions held at these conferences play a key role for the society in its efforts to share Japan’s research on artificial intelligence with other countries. In recent years, AI research has proved of great interest to business people. The event draws both more and more presenters and attendees every year, including people of diverse backgrounds such as law and the social sciences, in additional to artificial intelligence. We are extremely pleased to publish this collection of papers as the research results of our international sessions.

This book presents selected and extended papers from the largest conference on artificial intelligence in Japan, which was expanded into an internationalized event for the first time in 2019: the 33rd Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI 2019), held on June 4–June 7, 2019 at TOKI MESSE in Niigata, Japan. The book’s content has been divided into six major sections, on (I) knowledge engineering, (II) agents, (III) education and culture, (IV) natural language processing, (V) machine learning and data mining, and (VI) cyber physics. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable reference guide for professionals, undergraduate and graduate students engaged in disciplines, fields, technologies, or philosophies relevant to AI, e.g., computer/data science, robotics, linguistics, and physics, introducing them to recent advances in this area and discussing the human society of tomorrow.
