Overton County was established in 1806 and at one time embraced all or portions of the territory that eventually became Fentress, Clay, Pickett, and Putnam counties. Some famous names associated with Overton, and later Fentress, include Davy Crockett, John Sevier, Joseph Copeland, and John M. Clements (father of Mark Twain). Since the early records of the counties of Fentress, Pickett, Putnam, and Jackson have all or partially been destroyed, the extant records of Overton County assume special significance. The work in hand contains records of approximately 2,500 early Overton County inhabitants and features abstracts of various classes of records.
