Twenty years ago, researchers wishing to identify contaminated areas in aquatic environments generally took water samples, and analysed them badly (as we have since discovered) for a few "pollutants" which were of topical note at the time (and which could be quantified by the methods then available). Today, the use of aquatic organisms as biomonitors in preference to water analysis has become commonplace, and many national and interna tional programmes exist around the world involving such studies. We believe that this trend will continue, and have complete faith in the methodology (when it is employed correctly). We hope that the following text assists in some part in attaining this goal, such that the quality of our most basic global resource -water - is adequately protected in the future. This book is an updated, completely revised version of a previous volume in this series entitled: ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS -- Techniques, applications and quality assurance. The book treats different aspects of environmental analysis such as sample handling and analytical techniques, the applications to trace analysis of pollutants (mainly organic compounds), and quality assurance aspects, including the use of certified reference materials for the quality control of the whole analytical process. New analytical techniques are presented that have been developed significantly over the last 6 years, like solid phase microextraction, microwave-assisted extraction, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric methods, immunoassays, and biosensors. The book is divided into four sections. The first describes field sampling techniques and sample preparation in environmental matrices: water, soil, sediment and biota. The second section covers the application areas which are either based on techniques, like the use of gas chromatography-atomic emission detection, immunoassays, or coupled-column liquid chromatography, or on specific application areas, like chlorinated compounds, pesticides, phenols, mycotoxins, phytotoxins, radionuclides, industrial effluents and wastes, including mine waste. Validation and quality assurance are described in the third section, together with the interpretation of environmental data using advanced chemometric techniques. The final section reports the use of somewhat advanced analytical methods, usually more expensive, less routinely used or less developed, for the determination of pollutants.

This study is the second phase of a two-year effort to determine the effects that sampling tubings have on organic analyte concentrations. In the first year, 20 different tubings were compared, under static conditions, with respect to sorption of organic contaminants and leaching of organic constituents. In this study, we examined what occurs under dynamic conditions when TCE-contaminated water is pumped through several different types of polymeric tubings. Sorption of organic solutes, leaching of organic constituents, and desorption of sorbed organic contaminants were all examined. Five tubings were selected for this study: a rigid fluoropolymer, a flexible fluoropolymer, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and two plasticized polypropylene tubings. These materials were selected because our static studies had shown that these tubings leached little or no organic constituents (as determined by HPLC analyses with an ultraviolet UV detector) and ranged from being the least sorptive tubings tested to among the most highly sorptive. The effects of tubing length and flow rate were examined. Results from these studies indicate that if water is pumped through tubing at a slow flow rate (100 mL/min), fluoropolymers should be used to prevent extensive losses of TCE and more sorptive analytes, especially if the tubing is 50 ft or longer. If a faster flow rate (1 L/min) is used, it appears that LDPE tubing can be used to sample TCE and other less sorptive analytes, although time for equilibration (2% hr) should be allowed to reduce losses in the deepest wells.
