On the influence attributed to philosophers, free-masons, and to the illuminati Jean Joseph Mounier PREFACE, BY THE TRANSLATOR, ONE of the chief fources of misfortune, infeparably attached to times of revolution and of civil difcord, is the want of moderation in men of all parties. In fuch eventful periods as that in which we live, men choofe their party often they knownot why. and purfue with heat all the meafures of thofe with whom they afibciate themfelves, without reflecting whether they are called for by neceffity, whether they are confident with prudence, or warranted by juftice. Two men equally able and equally honeft, placed within the revolutionary vortex, may be determined by the flighteft circumflance, operating on their vanity, their pride, or their envy, and a 3 without without their being confcious of the caufe, to choofe oppofite courfes, and to purfue them with equal zeal and obftinacy; the one as a violent unbending anftocrat, and the other as an infolent unfeeling republican. But fuch extremes, on either fide, are not confident with unfullied virtue, or with pure notions of political and moral duty. Such however is the fact, that in times of commotion and of civil difcord, the bulk of men are generally thus arranged into oppofite and hoftile parties, and often become guilty of crimes, in maintaining the exaggeration of thsir refpective opinions, at the bare afpedt of which they would have fliuddered in times of tranquillity. In judging of the itate of parties, in inquiring into the caufes, the progrefs, and confequenct s of revolutions, impartial men muft e r have this general fact in view. But it is difficult even for the fpedatbrs of fuch fcenes as we have witnefled during the l

This book is an invitation to the secret world behind the veil of daily events. In its pages you will meet the legendary Cagliostro and the Comte de Saint-Germain as they travel through the royal courts and Masonic lodges of eighteenth-century Europe, fomenting Revolution and working to overturn the social order of their day. Alchemists, magicians, Illuminati adepts, mystics, and Freemasons joined forces with politicians, journalists, scientists, writers, philosophers and libertines in a movement that forever altered the cultural landscape of Western civilization. Inaugurating two centuries of revolution and upheaval, the French Revolution of 1789 put an end to the concept of the divine right of kings, led to the formal separation of church and state, destroyed the remnants of medieval feudalism, and heralded the values of the Enlightenment as the triumphant banner under which the modern world would be born. Yet it was accompanied by a level of violence whose ferocity spoke more of an exorcism than a political restructuring. What lessons does the Revolution hold for us today? Do the forces of secret societies and silent conspiracies continue to influence the world? Historian Una Birch's classic account was originally published in 1911. Her proximity to and sympathy with the events offer a unique perspective. Secret society expert James Wasserman has made this work accessible to the modern reader with extensive annotations, a history of the Revolution, an introduction that places the Illuminati in context, and biographical sketches of the main participants. This book articulates a new research program, called “Ur-Illuminism,” which consists in an integrated and systematic study of humanity’s quest for “illumination,” namely, for the highest and noblest possible mode of being. Thus, it takes on the challenge of revising widely accepted ways of understanding and interpreting the ontological underpinnings of civilization and the ontological potential of humanity. It allows the reader to delve into a creative “rediscovery” of Platonism, medieval Christian mystics’ and scholars’ writings, and various “illuminist” systems, from the Orphic mystical cult to the European Enlightenment and thence to the eighteenth-century Illuminati fraternities and beyond. Moreover, the book studies major issues in the history of philosophy, politology, and esoteric systems (such as Hermeticism, the Kabbalah, alchemy, the Rosicrucian movement, Freemasonry, and the Bavarian Illuminati). It maintains that a postmodern “rediscovery” of premodern metaphysics, specifically, a postmodern esoteric theocracy (as distinct from old sacerdotalism and religious formalism), is the best bulwark against oppression and the ontological degradation of humanity, as well as the best path to the attainment of that wisdom and spiritual self-knowledge which constitute the existential integration and completion of the human being. In this context, it proposes a peculiar and intellectually fecund synthesis between Tory Anarchism, Libertarianism, Platonism, and Byzantine Hesychasm, as they are elucidated here.

In 'Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe' by John Robison, the author delves into the intricate web of secret societies and conspiracy theories that he believes are threatening the stability of Europe. Written in a dense and detailed style, Robison provides evidence and arguments to support his claims, drawing on historical events and contemporary political happenings to make his case. This book is a fascinating look into the paranoia and fear that gripped the minds of many during the Enlightenment period, reflecting the distrust of established institutions and the desire for radical change. Robison's writing style is academic and well-researched, making this a compelling read for those interested in the history of conspiracy theories and political intrigue. John Robison, a Scottish physicist and mathematician, was a prominent figure in the Enlightenment era, known for his criticisms of the Freemasons and other secret societies. His background in science and philosophy likely influenced his perspective on the motives and actions of these clandestine organizations, leading him to write this seminal work. I highly recommend 'Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe' to readers interested in the intersection of politics, religion, and secret societies during a tumultuous period in European history.
