Excerpt from On Old Rancho San Pascual: The Story of South Pasadena Aster Sunday, l9l7, found America in the Great War. There was a solemnity to the day such as no Easter had known since Lincoln's time. Southern California felt it along with the rest of the nation. President Wilson had signed the declaration of war but two days before. Night wires announcing the fact had been flashed to every army and national guard com mander in the country. Colonel Charles F. Hutchins, Commander of the old Seventh California, had received the message at three a.m. At his South Pasadena home and had without loss of a minute communicated with his captains all over Southern California. By Easter he had mobilized his men. By Easter South Pasadena had Opened a Red Cross room with over one hundred active women workers. Two days after Easter a company of home guards with lo7 members had been organized. The Sunday after Easter found the countryside blessed with a bounteous ra-in which soon brought South Pasa dena's 500 war gardens smiling through the damp earth. Easter Sunday two years later found Colonel Hutchins coming up his front walk arm-in-arm with his family. He and his men had been to France and back again. The war was over! California may be the golden state but it is also a garden state. Innumerable gardens have been made since the Europeans first came, starting with the Franciscan missionaries. The gold rush was the defining period, leading to immense expenditures by newly rich miners. This book discusses many simple but beautiful gardens created by waves of immigrants. Gardens were necessary for food but also represented repose and leisure. The nature and style of domestic and private gardens shape the landscape of cities and towns just as much as large civic architectural achievements.
