Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) remains one of the most challenging disorders of the brain. Contemporary conceptualization and therapeutic strategies are undergoing a revolution as a result of new insights derived from modern technological advances. This book was conceived in order to present this revolution to the reader. It covers current theories regarding the etiology of OCD, what is known about the genetics of this disorder, evidence from neuroimaging and a discussion of potential endophenotypes. There is an evaluation of current treatment approaches for the disorder, encompassing psychological, psychopharmacological and physical interventions, as well as a discussion of treatment resistance. The book considers methodological issues, plus reviews of OCD in pediatric populations. A summary chapter highlights some potential research avenues, in a discussion of the future directions in OCD. Rather than provide comprehensive coverage, repeating material from standard psychiatry textbooks, this book focuses on recent information and its application, distinguishing it from other titles. If you work in children with OCD, If you are interested in genetics, neurocognition or brain imaging, If you work with patients and would like to improve your assessment in OCD and OCD Spectrum disorders, to update your therapeutic strategies and to get a handle on cutting edge developments in this intriguing field, If you are planning a research project in OCD and would like to get some hints from people who are research leaders in this field and also learn about methodological issues specific to OCD research, then this book will be a valuable resource. A concise overview of the current state of the art in OCD assessment and treatment, including physical interventions and treatment resistance Focuses on scientific advances (including specific methodological issues) and how they can inform and benefit clinical practice Looks critically and broadly at the diagnostic classification, including the ongoing revision of the two major international systems Written by an A-list team of experts in the field who have a track record of being engaging authors

During the 10 years since publication of the first edition of this comprehensive volume, progress in neuroscience has had direct and immediate clinical implications in both the pharmacological and psychological arenas in the treatment of one of psychiatry's greatest challenges: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This second edition reflects this progress. Chapters include the latest data on the use of all current OCD treatments in special populations, such as the strictly religious, the elderly, children, adolescents, and those who are pregnant, and all are illustrated with new and updated detailed case histories that highlight specific treatments and diagnostic issues. This edition includes Three new pharmacotherapy chapters that discuss the use of sertraline, paroxetine, and citalopram and updates of the original edition's chapters on clomipramine, fluoxetine, and fluvoxamine An expanded chapter on children and adolescents that emphasizes the benefits of early detection, and describes the latest findings in immunological research with particular regard to pediatric autoimmune neurologic disorders associated with streptococcal infection (PANDAS) An expanded behavioral therapy chapter that encompasses not only detailed treatment plans for both individuals and groups (including multifamily groups) but also up-to-date empirical data to support their use The latest data on compounds for treating OCD (twice the number of compounds are now available than when the first edition was published), including details of the dramatic increase in our knowledge of pharmacokinetics, receptor profiles, interactions, and comparative efficacy during the past decade The clinical implications of today's broadened definition of OCD, which includes disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, pathological gambling, and Tourette's syndrome, and the complicated diagnostic and management issues -- with a call for innovative treatment approaches -- raised by the intimate relationship between OCD and schizophrenia (15% of patients with schizophrenia also have OCD) A multidisciplinary approach to treatment-resistant OCD, which occurs in approximately 30% of all cases, suggesting ways to combine our current knowledge and focus it on the treatment of a specific individual With their extensive clinical and research experience in treating OCD, the distinguished contributors to this volume provide clinicians with the latest, most reliable data so that they may better match treatment approaches with each patient's unique needs. Of enduring practical value, this updated "how to" manual will be welcomed by all clinicians treating patients with OCD, as well as students and other interested clinicians, as an effective tool in the ongoing challenge to understand and treat this frustrating disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex set of thoughts and behaviors that can vary greatly from person to person and can be related to and complicated by a wide range of other disorders. Clinicians are confronted with the challenge of accurately classifying its many variants and developing effective, systematic treatments for them. Some believe that OCD and related problems should be treated as subtypes of one condition; others argue that OCD is composed of a spectrum of many similar conditions that should be treated individually. In this handbook, Jonathan S. Abramowitz, Dean McKay, and Steven Taylor present an approach to diagnosis and treatment that considers subtype and spectrum concepts. They examine specific presentations of OCD—the symptoms—that are often seen in practice as well as the many disorders that may fall within the OCD spectrum. For each symptom and putative spectrum condition, they discuss empirical support, theories of etiology, and treatment issues. The volume covers cognitive-behavioral and biological factors, as well as the latest approaches to psychological and pharmacologic therapy, including complicating factors in treatment. In concluding chapters, the authors critically address the current literature on proposed subtype and spectrum disorders, consider the clinical implications of the literature, and map out a comprehensive, integrated approach for understanding OCD and related conditions. The only work on OCD that covers treatment options for specific symptoms and the full spectrum of related disorders, this handbook is a must-have for clinicians who are dedicated to improving the lives of patients with these challenging mental conditions.

Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs) have received considerable attention over the past two decades culminating with the inclusion of a new classification category of "Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders" (OCRDs) in DSM-5. This group of conditions includes OCD along with two newly minted conditions (Hoarding Disorder and Excoriation Disorder) and others previously classified as Somatoform Disorders (Body Dysmorphic Disorder) and Impulse Control Disorders (Hair Pulling Disorder). The implications for research on these conditions, as well as their relations with one another, are significant since their aggregation is based on putative central mechanisms with limited empirical support to date. Indeed, the past decades have seen a dramatic surge in research on OCRDs. Such scholarship has occurred across several domains including clinical phenomenology, assessment, and psychological therapies. A complete synthesis of the emerging data across these domains would be beyond the scope of a single journal article or series of articles while having the ability to comprehensively discuss advances in the field and stimulating in these areas Many of the available textbooks, although meritorious in their own right, are outdated and do not address the most recent research advances and emerging clinical implications. Indeed, the past decade has seen a tremendous growth in knowledge on treatment, assessment, treatment augmentation, and basic science that is not contained fully within existing volumes (see discussion of specific texts further below). Thus, providing a comprehensive textbook that addresses recent advances will provide a much needed update to the field of OCRDs. Furthermore, recent texts primarily address OCRDs from a biological standpoint, neglecting psychosocial theoretical and intervention approaches that enjoy the most empirical support of any conceptual and treatment approaches for most of the relevant conditions. As a result, the literature has been dominated by a single predominant perspective, which does not fully represent the available data or perspectives of front-line clinicians and researchers alike. As researchers and clinicians will be increasingly focused on this topic in light of the changes to DSM-5 - together with the dearth of current objective available information - this book will be a timely addition to the literature in guiding clinicians in advances in OCRDs that will impact their practice. Third, a number of conditions outside the OCRD chapter in DSM-5 are often proposed as "related" to OCD (e.g., misophonia).

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which is characterised by distressing intrusive thoughts and repetitive, time-consuming, task-oriented actions intended to counter these thoughts and reduce anxiety, represents a serious psychiatric condition and cause of disability worldwide. This book consists of five chapters that provide details on the effects of OCD and strategies for reducing its negative impact. Chapter One provides a general overview of OCD, including its neurochemical basis and treatment approaches. Chapter Two explores some of the nuisances present in working with individuals with OCD within the context of obsessive and compulsive content that may require additive elements to be considered in treatment. Chapter Three discusses the diagnostic criteria, clinical aspects, and current treatment approaches of paediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome and paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections. Chapter Four describes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents with OCD. Lastly, Chapter Five explains the role that religion takes in certain presentations of OCD and informs clinicians how to differentiate between standard religious practices and compulsive behaviours.

Although Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been known since the ancient times, the exact etiology and pathogenesis of OCD unfortunately still remain unknown. In addition, the therapeutic approaches elaborated for the treatment of OCD as a whole are not perfect, and this disorder as a rule is characterized by unfavorable course and lack of full therapeutic response. In the current book some modern data on pathogenesis, phenomenology and treatment of OCD are presented. Besides, the data on co-morbidity of OCD with other neurological and psychiatric disorders are also included. This book is intended for broad circle of readers, but mostly for psychiatrists, psychologists and neurologists.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is now recognized to be a serious and chronic illness that affects more than 2% of the population. Although the last decade has witnessed many advances on both the pharmacological and the behavioral fronts, fewer than 50% of cases benefit significantly from currently available treatments. In this volume, leading authorities offer a comprehensive, cutting-edge overview of etiology, diagnosis, assessment of OCD, and the latest approaches to treatment. A special focus is treatment-resistant cases that comprise over half the total. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Contemporary Issues in Treatmentwill be an indispensable resource for all professionals who seek better solutions to the often seemingly intractable problems of their OCD clients.
