Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

This 2001 book examines the motivation for electron scattering and develops the theoretical analysis of the process. It discusses our understanding of the underlying structure of nuclei and nucleons, and summarizes experimental electron scattering capabilities. This title has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

This book deals with the latest developments in the area of three-quark systems. Emphasis is given to the discussion of new experimental results in the areas of form factors, unpolarized and polarized structure functions, and baryon structure and spectroscopy. Of particular interest are the new theoretical developments in the area of generalized parton distributions and lattice quantum chromodynamics.

This book constitutes the proceedings of a workshop on 'Exclusive and Semi-exclusive Processes at High Momentum Transfer', sponsored by the Institute for Nuclear Theory (Seattle) and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Laboratory). The workshop was inspired by recent progress in the field, particularly in the uses of off-forward or skewed parton distributions to elucidate nucleon structure. This book contains the written versions of 41 scientific talks, on subjects including the aforementioned skewed parton distributions, and also on deeply virtual Compton scattering, semi-exclusive (or semi-inclusive) reactions, and hard elastic and transition form factors.

Non-nucleonic degrees of freedom in the nucleus must be understood in the nucleonic framework of nucleus in relation with the structure of the nucleons from which mesons are emitted to link the nucleons, and with isobars, mesonic exchange currents, and underlying conservation laws. This topical volume sheds light on these highly exciting non-nucleonic effects extracted as the result of interplay among the constituents including quarks, and on the limit of applicability of various conservation laws.

The method of the QCD sum rules was and still is one of the most productive tools in a wide range of problems associated with the hadronic phenomenology. Many heuristic ideas, computational devices, specific formulae which are useful to theorists working not only in hadronic physics, have been accumulated in this method. Some of the results and approaches which have originally been developed in connection with the QCD sum rules can be and are successfully applied in related fields, such as supersymmetric gauge theories, nontraditional schemes of quarks and leptons etc. The amount of literature on these and other more basic problems in hadronic physics has grown enormously in recent years. This volume presents a collection of papers which provide an overview of all basic elements of the sum rule approach and priority has been given to those works which seemed most useful from a pedagogical point of view.
