Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

Version 1.02 In this book, marriage is brought to the light of the Biblical, in the evangelical environment, in the traditional Judeo-Christian school. In God s vision, marriage was created for eternity, but due to human limitations, marriages are lasting, less than a lifetime. God did not create divorce, but this has been increasingly accepted in churches. This book brings a reflection, for couples to think about marriage again for eternity. Here is presented the institution of marriage, in the gaze of the one who created it: God. It is discussed the marriage in the body, in the soul and in the spirit. The care of the heart is explained against divorce. And it ends with the blessing in marriage, in the challenges, of the postmodern period. In the end, the reader will be touched to decide, in a marriage for a life, and for eternity.

This book presents the elements of everyday Portuguese, stressing European Portuguese, but also giving information on Brazilian Portuguese. Covering grammatical topics, vocabulary, and practice sentence material, this book is a solid, well-organized approach to Portuguese that anyone interested in the language will find highly useful. Pronunciation is very clearly explained first, and it is followed by twenty-five well-proportioned, progressive lessons that cover all the main points of contemporary grammar: gender, present indicative, formation of plural, agreement and position of adjectives, definite and indefinite article, use of ser and estar, commands, personal pronouns, imperfect indicative, reflexive pronouns and reflexive verbs, present subjunctive, future and imperfect subjunctive, conditional, negatives, infinitive, pluperfect and perfect indicative, and much more. An Appendix gives conjugations of regular verbs, orthographic-changing verbs, radical-changing verbs, and irregular verbs, while a Portuguese-English Vocabulary, an English-Portuguese Vocabulary, and an Index complete the book. This book is suitable for self-study outside of class, for refresher, and for reference. It is particularly useful as a supplement to phrase and conversational study.

Widely recognized as the standard work in its field, this volume traces in systematic form the history of the development of the sounds and forms of the Portuguese language from its Latin beginnings. Based upon years of research and painstaking consideration of all the significant publications on the subject, it clarifies a great deal that has been obscure in the transition from Latin to Old Portuguese, to modern Portuguese, and to Brazilian Portuguese. It also helps resolve many of the complex problems of Spanish and general Romance philology. For the second edition of From Latin to Portuguese, the author, Edwin B. Williams, has made substantial additions and revisions, has brought the bibliography up to date, and has utilized the latest research to reevaluate and confirm his original conclusions. In the light of these adjustments and the new material made available by Williams, this extraordinary synthesis must be classified as an indispensable handbook for the student and scholar working in the areas of Portuguese, Hispanic, and Romance philology.
