Excerpt from Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England and Wales In the performance of my task no available source of information has been unexplored, and it is hoped that the Annotated Index, which shows at a glance the date of the earliest entry in every Parish Register in England and Wales, and in which every transcript that has been printed is noted, will prove by its usefulness that my labours have not been in vain. I am only too conscious of the shortcomings of this publication, but can at least plead that I have honestly endeavoured, at a sacrifice of much time and labour, to compile a work which may be both of some historical interest and of some real value to the genealogist. Excerpt from Nottingham Parish Registers, Vol. 4: Marriages; St. Nicholas's Church, 1562 to 1812 The parish of St. Nicholas, like that of St. Peter, com prises but a very small portion of the ancient town, but its position renders the parish of special interest. Although the ancient church was destroyed in the sieges of Notting ham Castle during the Civil War of Charles l., the registers were fortunately preserved. There is, however, a break of about forty years, during which time the registers were kept at St. Peter's, and, as far as regards the marriages, are now presented to the reader. The entries in this volume, which, as in the previous ones, have been abstracted by Mr. John T. Godfrey, are in number, and with those of St. Mary's and St. Peter's, make up a total of persons married in the town of Nottingham, of whom we have record, before 1813. The entries have been reduced to a common form, and the following abbreviations adopted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
