This book is a new attempt to interrelate the chemistry of the non-metals. In the early chapters, simple compounds of the non-metals with the halogens, hydrogen, and oxygen are surveyed, permitting a large area of chemistry to be discussed without the burden of too many facts. The structural relationships in the elemental forms of the non-metals are then used as an introduction to the catenated compounds, including the boron hydrides. In the concluding chapter, selected heteronuclear chain, ring, and cage compounds are con sidered. In some chapters, we have thought it useful to outline important features of a topic in relation to chemical theory, before giving a more detailed ac count of the chemistry of individual elements. The book is certainly not comprehensive and the bias in the material selected probably reflects our interest in volatile, covalent non-metal compounds. Suggestions for furt her reading are presented in two ways. A selected bibliography lists general textbooks which relate to much of our subject matter. References in the text point to review articles and to a few original papers which we consider to be of special interest. Although there are few difficult concepts in the text, the treatment may be appreciated most by students with some previous exposure to a Group by Group approach to non-metal chemistry. We have assumed an elementary knowledge of chemical periodicity, bonding theory, thermodynamics, and spectroscopic methods of structure determination.

The current textbook is an excellent inroduction to the chemistry of the non-metallic elements. The book begins by reviewing the key theoretical concepts of chemical bonding and the properties of different bonding types. Subsequent chapters are focused on reactions, structures and applications of the non-metallic compounds. Combining careful pedagogy and clear writing style, the textbook is a must-have for students studying inorganic chemistry.

Chemistry of the Non-Metallic Elements is concerned with the non-metals and is to be read in conjunction with The Chemistry of the Metallic Elements by D. M. McC. Steele. The object has not been to provide an encyclopedic coverage of all the chemical reactions of non-metals but rather to select those which will enable the student to appreciate better the similarities and differences between the elements. The book discusses the chemistry of the non-metals in relation to their positions in the periodic groups. It covers the noble gases, hydrogen, the halogens, Group VIB, oxygen, sulfur, Group VB, nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon. Where the groups contain metals, as in Group IVA, their chemistry is briefly discussed to show the properties which occur. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of chemistry at the intermediate level, that is, the sixth-form/first-year university level. Readers are assumed to have a background of O-level chemistry and of O- or A-level physics and a working knowledge of elementary mathematics.

OLYMPIADS Champs Class 10 Science is an attempt to guide and prepare students for Olympiad examinations. The book will not only prepare the students for these examinations but will also help in developing a good aptitude and problem solving skills. The book covers the complete science portion which is divided into three sections- Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The book provides, for each chapter, important concepts followed by Multiple Choice Questions Exercises. Concepts are summarized in the form of concept map at the end of each chapter. Each chapter provides 2 levels of Exercises based on the level of difficulty. Each exercise contains Simple MCQs, Matching based MCQs, statement based MCQs, assertion-reason based MCQS, passage based MCQs and figure/picture based MCQs. The detailed solutions to the MCQ's are provided at the end of each chapter. 5 Online mock tests based on the different Olympiad exams are also provided along with the book. This book will really prove to be an asset for Class 10 students as they hardly find any material which can help them in building a strong foundation.

Corrosion for Everybody

People seldom enjoy corrosion. They usually perceive it as a nasty phenomenon with which they must cope. Yet many people, far from the corrosion field, come across it because of their professional duty. Lawyers, historians, doctors, architects, philosophers, artists, and archeologists, to name a few, may want or need to understand the principles of corrosion. This volume explains this important topic in a lucid, interesting, and popular form to everybody: to students and young engineers who are only beginning their studies, to scientists and engineers who have dealt with corrosion for many years, and to non-specialists involved in corrosion problems. The book uses a fresh writing style, with some new explanations relating to thermodynamics of oxidation of iron and mild steels in water, reversible and irreversible potential, solubility of oxygen in water and aqueous solutions of electrolytes, corrosion of metals in fuels, corrosion of storage tanks for fuels and their corrosion control, corrosion monitoring in practice, humanitarian aspects of corrosion science and technology (history of the evolution of knowledge about corrosion, relationships between corrosion and philosophy, corrosion and art). Many practical examples of various corrosion phenomena are given.
