After having spent over three decades in education and public service agencies, I am attempting to connect the dots in regard to education programs and practices and student achievement. Given the plethora of educational programs, practices, and studies reviewed and studied and implemented regarding educational reform and student achievements and initiatives currently in vogue in American education such as “No Child Left Behind” and “Race to the Top” have not advanced us to the point we hope to be. The main thrust or the common denominator in successful educational practices, in my opinion, is the relationship between students and teachers .I had the pleasure of working with two individuals in the educational field that exemplify the premise that no child rises to low expectations and, in their love of children and passion for learning, have transformed lives. This book attempts to put the current issues into a realistic perspective as the obstacles that are prevalent in education and also suggest some of the bright spots that are currently in practice. Due to the development of the international Education for All and Education for Sustainable Development movements, for which UNESCO is the lead agency, there has been an increasing emphasis on the power of education and schooling to help build more just and equitable societies. Thus giving everyone the opportunity to develop their talents to the full, regardless of characteristics such as gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religious persuasion, or regional location. As enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights over five decades ago, everyone has the right to receive a high quality and relevant education. In order to try to achieve this ideal, many countries are substantially re-engineering their education systems with an increasing emphasis on promoting equity and fairness, and on ensuring that everyone has access to a high quality and relevant education. They are also moving away from the traditional outlook of almost exclusively stressing formal education in schools as the most valuable way in which people learn, to accepting that important and valuable learning does not just occur in formal, dedicated education institutions, but also through informal and non-formal means. Thus learning is both lifelong and life-wide. This book brings together the experience and research of 40 recognised and experienced opinion leaders in education around the world. The book investigates the most effective ways of ensuring the UNESCO aim of effective education for all people in the belief that not only should education be a right for all, but also that education and schooling has the potential to transform individual lives and to contribute to the development of more just, humane and equitable societies.

In any endeavor, it is difficult to know what excellence is without knowing what excellence looks like. Linking theory and practice, Those Who Can: Why Master Teachers Do What They Do illustrates what instructional excellence "looks like" by detailing what elite instructors do and as importantly, why their pedagogical choices lead to uncommonly good student results. Thoughtfully written, clearly explained, and thoroughly researched by a master educator with more than four decades of public school experience, Those Who Can provides school administrators, education students, and teachers of all experience levels with a no-nonsense practical blueprint indicating what instructional strategies promote learning, what approaches undermine learner performance, and the behavioral principles underlying both outcomes. In demystifying the so-called art of instruction, the approaches outlined in Those Who Can will improve student achievement with little investment other than the time it takes to read the book, the courage to implement its concepts, and an open-minded willingness to challenge the educational status quo of what is for the instructional promise of what could be.
