The New Mexico Army National Guard has an Air Defense history. In the past thirty years the soldiers of the 111th Air Defense Brigade have diligently trained on the Duster, the Roland, the Chaparral, the Hawk, the Avenger and the Patriot systems. None of these units have been deployed to perform their war- time air defense mission. Due to the changing world climate, the Army is involved in a variety of missions around the world and at home. The New Mexico Army National Guard must become a relevant member of the team and transform part of its air defense organization to units that will meet their Country's call. The Army has a viable total force concept. It was the active and reserve components together that were successful in Desert Storm. Since that time this combined team has been deployed to numerous peace-keeping operations and domestic emergencies. Presently we are in a war against terrorism and our primary mission has become homeland security. The New Mexico Army National Guard has the responsibility to meet the full spectrum of missions. It has an opportunity to create a new type of Guard unit capable of deploying faster, training more efficiently and equipped to perform homeland security, domestic emergencies, peacekeeping operations and their war fighting mission. Times have changed and so should the New Mexico Army National Guard.

On June 18, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson called up virtually the entire army National Guard, some 150,000 men, to meet an armed threat to the United States: border raids covertly sponsored by a Mexican government in the throes of revolution. The Great Call-Up tells for the first time the complete story of this unprecedented deployment and its significance in the history of the National Guard, World War I, and U.S.-Mexico relations. Often confused with the regular-army operation against Pancho Villa and overshadowed by the U.S. entry into World War I, the great call-up is finally given due treatment here by two premier authorities on the history of the Southwest border. Marshaling evidence drawn from newspapers, state archives, reports to Congress, and War Department documents, Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler trace the call-up’s state-based deployment from San Antonio and Corpus Christi, along the Texas and Arizona borders, to California. Along the way, they tell the story of this mass mobilization by examining each unit as it was called up by state, considering its composition, missions, and internal politics. Through this period of intensive training, the Guard became a truly cohesive national, then international, force. Some units would even go directly from U.S. border service to the battlefields of World War I France, remaining overseas until 1919. Balancing sweeping change over time with a keen eye for detail, The Great Call-Up unveils a little-known yet vital chapter in American military history.

Bataan, the last bastion stemming the Japanese tidal wave across the Pacific, was about to fall. Only one unit, ROld Two Hon'erd," a small band of New Mexico National Guardsmen, remained intact. In her award-winning history, Dorothy Cave follows the members of this small unit who played a key role in this pivotal moment in history.
