DoT conducts the NPTS to obtain info. on personal travel of U.S. households with respect to why, how, when, where from, where to, how frequently, how long, & with whom. The NPTS also provides info. by subgroups of the pop., e.g., by age, gender, race, zero-vehicle households, which allows important policy analyses of how transport. serves these groups. Road Passenger Transport: Road Goods Transport reviews sources of statistics on road passenger transport and the road transport of goods in Great Britain. Topics covered range from organization of passenger transport to main sources of data, along with regional statistics, modeling, and forecasts. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of inland transport on land in Great Britain, with the exception of railways. Varieties of passenger movement are considered, together with measurement of passenger transport. The discussion then turns to the organization of passenger transport, with emphasis on private movement and taxis as well as public road passenger transport. Main sources of statistics are presented, including the National Travel Survey; road censuses; vehicle registration and excise licensing; and annual reports of area licensing authorities. Data for pedestrians, bicycles, private cars, and motorcycles are also given. Examples of secondary analysis of available data are provided for purposes of modeling and forecasting. Papers on relevant theory, methodology, and statistical data requirements are also considered. This monograph will be of interest to both transport economists and environmentalists.

Congestion continues to grow in America¿s urban areas. This report presents details on the 2004 trends, findings and what can be done to address the growing transportation problems. Trend data from 1982 to 2002 for 85 urban areas provides both a local view and a national perspective on the growth and extent of traffic congestion. The 2004 Report provides clear evidence that the time for improvements has arrived. Communicating the congestion levels and the need for improvements is a goal of this report. The decisions about which, and how much, improvement to fund will be made at the local level according to a variety of goals, but there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from this database.
