“Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand.” —Stevie Wonder, “Sir Duke” In 2003, young professor Ferentz LaFargue traveled to Paris, where his fiancée, Tricia, declared she wasn’t happy with their relationship, ending what he thought was a wonderful engagement. After days of “craying”—“that sorrow-laden blend of crying and praying delivered in perfect pitch by those in mourning”—Ferentz happened upon Stevie Wonder’s 1976 classic double album Songs in the Key of Life. Listening to it anew was a healing, spiritual trip down memory lane, helping him to come to terms with his breakup and reflect on how songs in general have been linked to his life. In this book, Ferentz invites us to get cozy and listen as he hits PLAY on meaningful tracks from Wonder and others, including Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, LL Cool J, Beenie Man, Sheryl Crow, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, and Black Sabbath. He recalls: How the fusion of rock and rap in the breakthrough Run-D.M.C./Aerosmith video “Walk This Way” helped to change an adolescent Ferentz from outcast to authority figure How Michael Jackson’s Thriller brought back a traumatic childhood experience How Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” speaks to the tension between his Christian beliefs and his need to rip it up in clubs as a hip-hop head In the tradition of Nick Hornby’s Songbook¸ these words paint a portrait of a life framed by sounds, allowing all of us to think about what songs have been key in our own lives.

The key to life? A question many of us ask ourselves on a daily basis. Why am I here? Why did I do that? What makes me different from the rest? The world we live in today is a different world from yesterday. In my opinion, majority of people are being brought up believing in violence, war, suicide, crime, abuse, bullying, Alcohol & Drugs but most of all people seem to believe in money. To which all prove a negative effect on our lives. You could believe Alcohol & Drugs are the Devil of our time, spreading like the plague wiping out humanity, mentally and physically. Disability rates are rising fast throughout the world constantly. The NHS are over run with mentally ill depressed people, as are the drug & alcohol services and nobody seems to have an answer, so we carry on running around in circles chasing our tails like dogs made to accept our fate of diagnosis be it mentally ill or addicted. The highest killer of men today under the age of 45 is suicide, which gives me the reason to believe unless we do something about it, we are a dying breed. Growing within the human race due to negligence to others, negativity toward our own flesh & blood. Cancers now leaving us & our children with a roundabout whopping fifty percent chance of being diagnosed. That’s before we smoke, drink or take drugs. As we grow older some of us begin ask ourselves, where have our lives gone? Most uneducated people only seem to believe that Jesus was nailed to the cross, this day in age, nobody wants to learn how or why? Because unfortunately this day in age Jesus didn’t sniff cocaine, to which I'd image hes probably pleased about, as he had a bad enough time as it was. Should you choose to believe in yourself & the power of life itself, the power of love. You will not be lead astray. Together we will change the entire world for ourselves, and our children thinking twice about the future. I will tell you the story of my own upbringing through to this very day, the good times and the bad. School, careers, major addictions, depression, suicide attempts, negativity from others, positivity from the other side, my passion for music, how life affected me and how I got through it. What if this Book reaches out to everybody in some way shape or form? Giving my overall opinion on mental illness, addiction, relationship problems, and many other healing capabilities including my own personal view on cancer. But most of all an opinion to happiness in life!

This short book provides a sketch of the important, but underrated book written by 19th-century Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, The Philosophy of Freedom. The purpose of Key to Life is to help new readers make sense of the essential ideas of Steiner's book and prepare them for working through the detailed account itself. Grasping the key ideas should inspire readers to dive into the original at a later time and read it without encountering major obstacles. While Steiner's work delves into the age-old question of freedom of will, his approach to the experiential exploration of the nature of thinking is unique. A human act can only meaningfully be called free if the person acting is fully conscious of the reasons for his/her action. This means that the degree of freedom of the act is determined by the degree of freedom of the thinking preceding the act. But what is thinking? Iddo Oberski's book explains how Steiner sees thinking as a manifestation in us of a natural phenomenon, and as such, thinking should be understood as a real experience of the spiritual world. Steiner's philosophy sparked a movement called Anthroposophy, which seeks to develop a path to knowledge that runs in between science and mysticism. First-time author Iddo Oberski is originally from Amsterdam, Netherlands. He is now a lecturer at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Throughout his studies in neurobiology, primatology and education, he always thought that a real knowledge of the human being was missing. In Steiner's book, he felt he finally got some answers. A poet’s audio obsession, from collecting his earliest vinyl to his quest for the ideal vacuum tubes. A captivating book that “ingeniously mixes personal memoir with cultural history and offers us an indispensable guide for the search of acoustic truth” (Yunte Huang, author of Charlie Chan). Garrett Hongo’s passion for audio dates back to the Empire 398 turntable his father paired with a Dynakit tube amplifier in their modest tract home in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. But his adult quest begins in the CD-changer era, as he seeks out speakers and amps both powerful and refined enough to honor the top notes of the greatest opera sopranos. In recounting this search, he describes a journey of identity where meaning, fulfillment, and even liberation were often most available to him through music and its astonishingly varied delivery systems. Hongo writes about the sound of surf being his first music as a kid in Hawai‘i, about doo-wop and soul reaching out to him while growing up among Black and Asian classmates in L.A., about Rilke and Joni Mitchell as the twin poets of his adolescence, and about feeling the pulse of John Coltrane’s jazz and the rhythmic chords of Billy Joel’s piano from his car radio while driving the freeways as a young man trying to become a poet. Journeying further, he visits devoted collectors of decades-old audio gear as well as designers of the latest tube equipment, listens to sublime arias performed at La Scala, hears a ghostly lute at the grave of English Romantic poet John Keats in Rome, drinks in wisdom from blues musicians and a diversity of poetic elders while turning his ear toward the memory-rich strains of the music that has shaped him: Hawaiian steel guitar and canefield songs; Bach and the Band; Mingus, Puccini, and Duke Ellington. And in the decades-long process of perfecting his stereo setup, Hongo also discovers his own now-celebrated poetic voice.
