Moving Difference demonstrates how differences between migrants who share the same nationality travel with them and can impact on every aspect of their ‘mobile lives’. Analysing the lived experiences and narratives of Brazilians in London, it adds an in-depth ethnographic understanding of the specific contours of difference to studies of migration by demonstrating how social differences, rooted in colonial legacies, are constantly being re-created and negotiated in the everyday making of the global world. By using ethnographic observations and in-depth interviews, in addition to historical and contextual analyses, the book allows us to understand how people speak of, engage with and negotiate difference in their everyday lives and how this is shaped by the macro-political and -social contexts of immigration and emigration. Giving attention to the complex interrelations between ‘here’ and ‘there’, past and present, this book allows us to go beyond the proliferated homogenised stereotypes of ‘the migrant’ and ‘the migrant community’ often reproduced by academics as well as by the media and politicians, whether with a view to pathologising or romanticising the ‘migrant other’. The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s- cess. Wavelets from a Statistical Perspective offers a modern, 2nd generation look on wavelets, far beyond the rigid setting of the equispaced, dyadic wavelets in the early days. With the methods of this book, based on the lifting scheme, researchers can set up a wavelet or another multiresolution analysis adapted to their data, ranging from images to scattered data or other irregularly spaced observations. Whereas classical wavelets stand a bit apart from other nonparametric methods, this book adds a multiscale touch to your spline, kernel or local polynomial smoothing procedure, thereby extending its applicability to nonlinear, nonparametric processing for piecewise smooth data. One of the chapters of the book constructs B-spline wavelets on nonequispaced knots and multiscale local polynomial transforms. In another chapter, the link between wavelets and Fourier analysis, ubiquitous in the classical approach, is explained, but without being inevitable. In further chapters the discrete wavelet transform is contrasted with the continuous version, the nondecimated (or maximal overlap) transform taking an intermediate position. An important principle in designing a wavelet analysis through the lifting scheme is finding the right balance between bias and variance. Bias and variance also play a crucial role in the nonparametric smoothing in a wavelet framework, in finding well working thresholds or other smoothing parameters. The numerous illustrations can be reproduced with the online available, accompanying software. The software and the exercises can also be used as a starting point in the further exploration of the material.

Following from the very successful First KES Symposium on Agent and Multi-Agent Systems – Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2007), held in Wroclaw, Poland, 31 May–1 June 2007, the second event in the KES-AMSTA symposium series (KES-AMSTA 2008) was held in Incheon, Korea, March 26–28, 2008. The symposium was organized by the School of Computer and Information Engineering, Inha University, KES International and the KES Focus Group on Agent and Mul- agent Systems. The KES-AMSTA Symposium Series is a sub-series of the KES Conference Series. The aim of the symposium was to provide an international forum for scientific research into the technologies and applications of agent and multi-agent systems. Agent and multi-agent systems are related to the modern software which has long been recognized as a promising technology for constructing autonomous, complex and intelligent systems. A key development in the field of agent and multi-agent systems has been the specification of agent communication languages and formalization of ontologies. Agent communication languages are intended to provide standard declarative mechanisms for agents to communicate knowledge and make requests of each other, whereas ontologies are intended for conceptualization of the knowledge domain. The symposium attracted a very large number of scientists and practitioners who submitted their papers for nine main tracks concerning the methodology and applications of agent and multi-agent systems, a doctoral track and two special sessions.
