Stranger Things meets A Monster Calls in this spine-tingling, emotionally rich middle grade novel about a boy who must protect his neighborhood from a malevolent monster tree while dealing with the recent loss of his father. “Family and friendship form the center of this spooky yet moving story which will captivate young readers.” —Adrianna Cuevas, Pura Belpré Honor- and Edgar Award-winning author of The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez and The Ghosts of Rancho Espanto Something evil is growing . . . Linus used to be an artist, like his dad. Now his father is gone, and Linus’s mom has moved them to the other side of the city, hoping for a fresh start. Maybe, for the first time in months, Linus will even draw again. But there’s something unusual about their neighbor Maude and something wrong with the grotesque tree in her backyard. At night Linus sees it moving, changing, growing. When increasingly bizarre events plague the neighborhood—massive claw marks appearing on doors and cars, pets going missing, sightings of a red-eyed creature—he suspects Maude and her tree are to blame. With his home under threat, Linus teams up with his goofy best friend, Spencer, and no-nonsense new girl Abby to unearth whatever sinister seeds have been planted next door . . . where something truly monstrous is just taking root. Sarah Allen weaves together spooky supernatural adventure with a poignant tale of grief, the healing power of art, and the uniting force of friendship in Monster Tree.

Olivia is on the road trip of her dreams, with her trusty camera and her big sister Ruth by her side. Three years ago, before their family moved from California to Tennessee, Olivia and Ruth buried a time capsule on their favorite beach. Now, they’re taking an RV back across the country to uncover the memories they left behind. But Ruth’s depression has been getting worse, so Olivia has created a plan to help her remember how life used to be: a makeshift scavenger hunt across the country, like pirates hunting for treasure, taking pictures and making memories along the way. All she wants is to take the picture that makes her sister smile. But what if things can never go back to how they used to be? What if they never find the treasure they’re seeking? Through all the questions, loving her sister, not changing her, is all Olivia can do—and maybe it’s enough.

He saw the look on his dad's face. He would never forget it. Dad had asked his wayward nineteen-year-old son, ''Where are you living now, Pat?" "Here!" he exclaimed. His siblings cheered. Mom smiled. Dad wondered what was next. Later that night, his dad started reminiscing about the last few years in Billings, Montana. Nine years ago, he was in a financial hole that seemed impossible to ever climb out of. He had skipped paying the last ten house payments. He hadn't gotten late payment statements or anything. He went into the bank and looked up an old friend who worked there. Someone had made a clerical error eleven months earlier and had recorded receiving ten payments instead of one. His banker friend said that he was going to make another clerical error and increase the term of his loan for another ten months. He told dad he would call him for the next few months to remind him to make his house payment. Dad prayed for a better paying job. Months later, Dad fell into his business where all of a sudden, he employed one hundred salesmen. Years later, he prayed for a bigger house, and someone mentioned that a neighbor wanted to move into a smaller house. Somehow, they traded houses, and moved within a month or two. Now they had a house with one more bedroom and one more bathroom. He had also prayed for one less child in the house. I was the one less child he had prayed for. He mentioned Matthew 18:10 about his personal guardian angel. "Why the hell would I want to know all that crap?" Pat wondered as he headed for the party. Years later, after the passing of both of his parents and most of his older relatives, he wonders, "What was my dad thinking, how could he have done that, why did he do that..." Pat decided that his children could read what he was thinking, how he did that, why he did that. He decided to write it down. After a few years of writing and losing many typed backups, he started sorting his collection of stories into two groups: Moments and My Guardian Angel. Publishing a book, combining these two groups of stories, is an attempt to save his writings. There is much more. This is just the first book.

A Mighty Girl Best Book of 2020! From debut author Sarah Allen comes a pitch-perfect, heartwarming middle grade novel about growing up, finding yourself, and loving people with everything you’re made of. Twelve-year-old Libby Monroe is great at science, being optimistic, and talking to her famous, accomplished friends (okay, maybe that last one is only in her head). She’s not great at playing piano, sitting still, or figuring out how to say the right thing at the right time in real life. Libby was born with Turner Syndrome, and that makes some things hard. But she has lots of people who love her, and that makes her pretty lucky. When her big sister Nonny tells her she’s pregnant, Libby is thrilled—but worried. Nonny and her husband are in a financial black hole, and Libby knows that babies aren’t always born healthy. So she strikes a deal with the universe: She’ll enter a contest with a project about Cecilia Payne, the first person to discover what stars are made of. If she wins the grand prize and gives all that money to Nonny’s family, then the baby will be perfect. Does she have what it takes to care for the sister that has always cared for her? And what will it take for the universe to notice?
