The air quality data analysed in this report were provided by the NationalAir Pollution Surveillance monitoring network, which maintains airmonitoring stations in most Canadian cities with populations of over 50,000. The periods for which valid national data are available and the pollutantsconsidered are: sulphur dioxide, 1974 - present; nitrogen dioxide, 1977 -present; carbon monoxide, 1974 - present; ozone, 1979 - present; suspendedparticulate, 1974 - present; lead, 1974 - present; soiling index, 1974 -present. Monitoring data were analyzed to determine trends in nationalaverage annual concentrations of these contaminants, and were alsocompared with the National Ambient Air Quality Objectives.
