An Honest and Revolutionary Guide to the Emotions Moms Feel But Seldom Talk About A few years ago, Dr. Claire Nicogossian began noticing a trend in her therapy room: Mothers are struggling with the challenging and unexpected emotions that surface during their journey through motherhood. In the confines of a safe, judgment-free space, they share about the heavy guilt they carry from losing control and yelling at their children; the crippling fear that they are failing their families; and the exhaustion of juggling work, home, and family. Dr. Claire calls these our shadow emotions. While varying in intensity, our shadow emotions take some form of sadness, anger, fear, embarrassment, or disgust, often a combination. In this breakthrough book, Dr. Claire sheds light on these shadow emotions and provides a path to thriving joy, inner calm, and radiant confidence. Drawing upon her own experiences of raising four children and many years of counseling mothers as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Claire shares practical tips, strategies, and encouragement to help women in all stages of motherhood. By creating new language for the feelings moms experience but seldom talk about—inspired by the groundbreaking work of Carl Jung—this book has the power to create a radical shift in the way we understand and navigate modern motherhood. With Dr. Claire’s guidance, mothers everywhere will discover the deep joy, fulfillment, and inner peace that are already within their reach.

Every mother wants her daughter to love the skin she's in, to be free of insecurity and poor body image. But no matter how much we try to tell our daughters that they are beautiful and lovable as they are, words are not enough. And if we're honest, we don't always set the best example of being body confident. Until we truly see ourselves as good enough, our girls will struggle. With deep compassion, Maria Furlough delves into the root causes of our insecurity, offers biblical guidance for seeing ourselves as God sees us, and shows how to model our newfound confidence to our impressionable daughters. Speaking as a daughter, a youth leader, and a mother, Furlough shares her own struggles and triumphs, as well as expert advice from a pediatrician, a nutritionist, a Christian counselor, and more. What we say to our daughters might last a moment. What we show our daughters lasts a lifetime. With God's help, we can put aside our obsession with bodily perfection and refocus on becoming and raising godly women.

In Confidence Culture, Shani Orgad and Rosalind Gill argue that imperatives directed at women to “love your body” and “believe in yourself” imply that psychological blocks rather than entrenched social injustices hold women back. Interrogating the prominence of confidence in contemporary discourse about body image, workplace, relationships, motherhood, and international development, Orgad and Gill draw on Foucault’s notion of technologies of self to demonstrate how “confidence culture” demands of women near-constant introspection and vigilance in the service of self-improvement. They argue that while confidence messaging may feel good, it does not address structural and systemic oppression. Rather, confidence culture suggests that women—along with people of color, the disabled, and other marginalized groups—are responsible for their own conditions. Rejecting confidence culture’s remaking of feminism along individualistic and neoliberal lines, Orgad and Gill explore alternative articulations of feminism that go beyond the confidence imperative.

Because super-active children push the boundaries of society’s expected behaviors, moms of the hyperactive often feel alone, misunderstood, and judged while also being exhausted from handling that high-energy child. Tommy's Wired and Mommy's Tired offers hope to these mothers through inspirational narratives based on the challenges Rita Bergen faced when parenting her hyperactive son. From her son's prenatal circus to out-of-control toddler years and an electrical childhood, Rita’s anecdotes care for the needs of the mother by addressing a variety of topics specific to moms, such as coping with emotions, managing your world, and understanding the realities of hyperactivity. Tommy's Wired and Mommy's Tired offers empathy and inspiration, not child-raising formulas or behavior management tips. Many great books give advice for managing hyperactive behavior, yet these don’t immediately improve a mother’s fatigue because consistently implementing all the advice is a non-stop, exhausting job. Therefore, Tommy's Wired and Mommy's Tired seeks to inspire courage rather than teach child-raising strategies—offering perspective and hope to moms who face the difficult work of raising a super-active child. The content also includes a letter from Rita’s adult, hyperactive son in which he thanks moms of wired children for their tireless effort, assuring them that all their blood, sweat, and tears are worth it in the end. A bonus section of Frequently Asked Questions provides helpful tips to family and friends who desire to help a struggling mother.
