The passing of cheap and abundant land, the consequent crowded and intensive conditions of agriculture, and the further consequence of soaring prices for dairy products, have created a demand for an animal that produces milk more economically than the cow and under conditions where a cow could not be kept. This demand the well bred goat fulfils. The spread of tuberculosis, a disease whose germ is often carried by the cow and her milk, creates a demand for a milk producing animal that is resistant to this disease. Again, the goat answers the need.
