Excerpt from Modern English Statesmen T is one of the unsolved problems of history whether great statesmen rule their country or whether they merely register the desires and opinions of their age. Excerpt from Lives of British Statesmen The moral lessons afforded by the career of states men demand not less attention. Every one is interested to learn, from such eminent examples, that the lustre of the highest station is derived from the same virtues as those which embellish pri vate life; and that happiness is most attainable, as well as most secure, when our condition excites not the jealous passions of mankind. Excerpt from English Statesmen The writer of this volume, said the critic, is a young man of unblemished character and of distinguished parliamentary talents the rising hope of those stern and unbending Tories who follow, reluctantly and cautiously, a leader whose ex perience and eloquence are indispensable to them, but whose cautious temper and moderate opinions they abhor. It would not be at all strange, he adds, if Mr. Glad stone were one of the most unpopular men in England. Excerpt from The Men at the Helm: Biographical Sketches of Great English Statesmen I am not aware that the lives of our statesmen have ever before been brought together in a volume of moderate compass, notwithstanding the interest which necessarily attaches to history at once so romantic and matter-of-fact. We have good reason, however, to be proud of those men who stood at the helm while the ship of the State was toiling through laborious seas, and buffeted by perilous storms. In fair weather we are too apt to forget how much we owe to their constancy, courage, and skill - to the brains which guided, and the hearts which never despaired of, the fortunes of the commonwealth. May Englishmen ever treasure as a precious heritage the fame of a Hampden, a Walpole, and a Chatham - a Pitt, a Canning, and a Peel! Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from English Statesmen Since the Peace of 1815 That, for some reason, this method of treatment did not meet with the approval of the proprietors, who had expected, I believe, more biography and less politics than it was consistent with my plan to furnish. It was, therefore, suggested to me, that I should place them in the hands of the late Editor, to be disposed of at his own discretion. The result was an arrangement with Messrs Bemrose, by which they were to be brought out in the shape of a separate volume and, I have merely to add, that, although it would not have occurred to me to write a book upon this subject, partly because I have already travelled over a good deal of the same ground in another work, partly7 because an original work seems to require a raison d'etre of its own not always to be found in the wants of periodical literature, nevertheless, as the Sketches were in existence, I saw no reason why they should not be given to the public. They are incomplete, but I hope they are not inaccurate; and I hope, too, their incompleteness is not of a character to. Excerpt from Lives of Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 2 The life of Eliot is the first that has appeared. He did not survive to be an actor in the scene dur ing the most obvious part of the great contest; and posterity has been so much occupied with those who did, that they are startled when they have leisure to look back, and see these older and not less noble shapes of its commencement, these less bodily, yet hardly less visible, demi-gods, - whovi preface.
