A model is presented for the attack of two defended target complexes with a fixed force of imperfect missiles. The attackers will be directed first at the defensive system then at the targets themselves. The imperfect defenders are used against the attackers on a one-for-one basis as long as defenders remain. If any attacker penetrates the defensive system, all the defenders at that target complex are destroyed. The problem addressed is the offensive problem of determining how many attackers to send to each defensive system and to each target complex. The necessary mathematical relationships are derived and used to solve a sample problem. (Author).

This thesis presents a ballistic missile defense allocation model for the terminal defense of urban targets of varied value. The model allocates interceptors in proportion to the value of targets. Defensive missiles have a probability of interception, offensive re-entry vehicles are perfect, and the offense knows both the defensive allocation and firing doctrine. The area defended by a single interceptor farm is considered to be a point target and can be defended by no other interceptors. For any value of the offensive payoff in expected value per re-entry vehicle, the model determines the least cost minimax allocation and firing doctrine. (Author).

Many separated targets, of only a few differing values, are subject to a simultaneous attack. The area defenses considered have (a) impact point prediction (IPP) and full coordination, or (b) no IPP and full coordination, or (c) no IPP and partial coordination. For a given attack, the defense wishes to allocate its interceptors to maximize the expected total survival value of the targets. For a given attack size, and with knowledge of the defense's capabilities, the offense seeks a strategy to minimize expected total survival value against best defense. We present algorithms to determine optimal attack and defense strategies and the optimal value of the min-max problem, and we show how to take computational advantage of the relatively few unique target values. Illustrative computational results are provided.
