Excerpt from Minnesota Brief Sketches of Its History, Resources and Opportunities Previous to the settlement of this area by white immigration, which may be said to have begun in 1849, when the Territory of Minnesota was organized, there were nearly two hundred years of gradually in creasing knowledge oi the geography of this state. During the first century, its explorers were French, chiefly led to this distant region for the profits of the fur trade. In the first half of the second century, after the British conquest of Canada, the explorers were English-speaking traders and travelers; and in its latter half, expeditions sent by the United States. Government to acquire information of the unsettled parts of the Northwest Territory and of the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase. The entire history to be here briefly sketched is thus divisible into three parts: I. The period of French exploration in Minnesota, from 1655 to 1763, the date of the cession of Canada to the English 2. The period of English colonial and United States exploration, from 1763 to 1849; 3. The period of Minnesota's territorial and state development, from 1849 to 1904. Excerpt from Minnesota: A Brief Sketch of Its History, Resources and Advantages From this time the vague N orthwest began to emerge from chaos, and to be better known of men; although it was to be three-quarters Of a century, or more, before all of the territory now known as the State Of Minnesota should become one coherent and recognized commonwealth. The day of adventure had passed. The day-of actual exploration, with a view to settlement and ultimate cultiva tion, was to begin. But-the northwest territory was as yet as little defined, and subject to as many conflicting claims, as we're the western portions of the grants of those great English companies whose American colonies pretended to reach from one ocean to the other. Excerpt from Our Minnesota: A History for Children IN giving to the public this little book on the History of Minnesota, the author makes no claim that much is presented in the way of new material, but hopes that the fact that it is written for chil dren will make it possible, as it has not been before, for the children of Minnesota to learn the history of her past and hence to love it. While many things are necessarily omitted, not only for lack of space, but also because they are not of particular interest to children, the aim throughout the work is accuracy. The sources which have been used are to be found largely in the diaries and papers of the Minnesota Historical Society, reliance put largely upon the statements of those who helped to make the history here related. Excerpt from Minnesota and Its Resources: To Which Are Appended Camp-Fire Sketches, or Notes of a Trip From St. Paul to Pembina and Selkirk Settlement on the Red River of the North The facts and statements contained in this work will be found particularly correct, and it is thought will meet the de sire of the community throughout the states - at least that part of it intending to remove hither, who wish a reliable work for reference and information concerning the many inter esting topics pertaining to this territory. The style, though somewhat glowing, is not in the least overdrawn. Those familiar with the country will, admit, on a perusal, that the half has not been told. To present a plain and truthful picture has been my only aim; and if, in any instance, I have erred, an absorbing interest in the cause of Minnesota must offer sufficient atonement for such error. Excerpt from Minnesota: Its Resources and Possibilities As knowledge accumulates and opportunity for observation broadens, thoughtful minds are more and more included to look to the physical world for the causes of conditions among men. It is a fact, hard and rugged as it may appear to the sentimental mind, that man is a true child of nature. The warm days of a springtime are enervating. One feels a lethargy stealing over him as the high nerve tension of winter gives place to the greater indolence of the summer months. Resist it as he will, the body cannot respond to ambitious effort. The proverbial shiftlessness of the south and the shriveled and narrowed physiques and intellects of the high north are well attested facts. The laws which direct the course of things extend to the human race and bind man down to the conditions which surround him, except so far as a touch of the divine gives him power to modify himself or to bring under his own control the surroundings under which he passes. Touching this position one becomes convinced on reading the opening pages of Curtius' History of Grreece. With a masterly hand the author traces the peculiar traits of the several tribes of the Grecian nation to the characteristics of soil, climate and surroundings of the several portions of that peninsula. How the warm, sunny valleys and rich bottom lands developed the disposition to submit to the will of heaven: and how the hills W(ire covered with the spirit of brave independence are clearly pointed out. Sibley, pre served in the library of the Minnesota Historical Society; some hundreds of letters saved by Colonel John H. Stevens, and deposited by him in the same library; the papers of Ignatius Donnelly, in the hands of his family; the great collection of Green Bay and Prairie du Chien papers belonging to the Wisconsin Historical Society; the remarkable group of early French documents owned by the Chicago Historical Society; and finally, the price less collection of Minnesota newspapers preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society.
