It will be demonstrated that 'humanitarian intervention' and R2P are evoked in the news media if so called 'enemy' countries of Western states conduct human rights violations. The Western news media shows far less concern for human rights violations if they are conducted by Western states and their 'allies'. Since the 2016 U.S. presidential election, concerns about fake news have fostered calls for government regulation and industry intervention to mitigate the influence of false content. These proposals are hindered by a lack of consensus concerning the definition of fake news or its origins.
