The book notes that the membrane never becomes plugged in dialysis because of some opposite movement of the solvent. Another paper points out that the significance of radioactive tracers in immunochemistry employed to identify and label macromolecules functioning as antigens and antibodies. By 1960 the scientific community began observing an ever increasing explosion in the literature embrac ing the many facets of industrial microbiology. Many of the so-called traditional areas were being replaced by more modern provocative channels of endeavor. It was about this time that excellent review-type annual publications, such as Advances in Applied Microbiology, Progress in Industrial Microbiology and Developments in Industrial Microbiology emerged reporting the ex citing new work. It was soon, thereafter, that the Division of Microbial Chemistry shed its probationary status to become a bona fide unit of the American Chemi cal Society. A rash of new applied microbiological v vi FOREWORD textbooks arrived on the scene. The number of journals reporting the day-to-day scientific achievements also burgeoned. Early in my industrial career, I found it impera tive to devise a "workable" key to the ever increasing volume of literature that was emerging. This I com piled over the years on voluminous stacks of file cards which have in essence been reprinted here as "my" Guide to the Literature for the Industrial Microbiologist. The Guide has, indeed, served me well and through it, one can readily ascertain the state of the art of any of the many specialized subjects of industrial micro biology. Leukocyte culture conferences have a long pedigree. This volume records some of the scientific highlights of the 16th such annual con ference, and is a witness to the continuing evolution and popularity of leukocyte culture and of immunology. There is strong evidence of the widening horizons of immunology, both technically, with the obviously major impact of molecular biology into our understanding of cellular processes, and also conceptually. Traditionally, the 'proceedings' of these conferences have been published. But have the books produced really recorded the major part of the conference, the informal, friendly, but intense and some times heated exchanges that take place between workers in tackling very similar problems and systems and which are at the heart of every successful conference? Unfortunately this essence cannot be incorpo rated by soliciting manuscripts. For this reason, we have changed the format of publication, retaining published versions of the symposium papers, but requesting the workshop chairmen to produce a summary of the major new observations and areas of controversy highlighted in their sessions, as a vehicle for defining current areas of interest and debate. Not an easy task, as the workshop topics were culled from the abstracts submitted by the participants, rather than being on predefined topics. The unseasonal warmth in Cambridge was reflected in the atmos phere of the conference, the organization of which benefited from the administrative skills of Jean Bacon, Philippa Wells, Mr. Peter Irving, and Mrs.
