Excerpt from Memorials, Vol. 1 In the evenings of the summer of 1885 my Father and I were much alone, my Mother having died in the April of that year, and he then told me more than I had before known of his own father and his early life; and when we went to Siena the following August, I asked him to write these recollections, that we might possess them. He took with him to Siena an accumulation of unsorted family letters, and in reading them and writing these Memorials he lived over again the life which made him. Beginning with his parents, he naturally passed on to his home, and in granting our request as to writing some record of his own life also, he could not write of himself apart from his brothers and sisters and friends, and, above all, from my Mother. For as he did not live for himself, so he did not live in himself; and as his heart was filled with the love of his people and his country, he could only write of himself as affected by these relationships. Excerpt from Memorials, Vol. 1: Part II. Personal and Political, 1865-1895 There are many things in this, as in the former Part of my Memorials, which may have for my children an interest which they would not have for others. In commending them to their love, I wish only to say that, as to matters of importance, I have generally thought it better to give the text of letters and other documents, when I have been permitted or have felt myself at liberty to do so, than to rely upon my own impressions: and when, instead of doing this, I have stated the substance, rather than the words, of important letters, this has been done, not. Excerpt from Memorials, and Other Papers, Vol. 1 of 2 These papers I am anxious to put into the hands Of your house, and, so far as regards the U. S., Of your house exclusively; not with any view to fur ther emolument, but as an acknowledgment Of the services which you have already rendered me; namely, first, in having brought together SO widely scattered a collection - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found from nervous depression to be absolutely insur mountable; secondly, in having made me a partici pator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the Shadow Of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in estab lished usage, solely and merely upon your own spontaneous motion. Some Of these new papers, I hope, will not be without their value in the eyes Of those who have taken an interest in the original series. But at all events, good or bad, they are now tendered to the appropriation of your individual house, the Messrs. Ticknor fields, according to the amplest extent of any power to make such a transfer that I may be found to possess by law or custom in America. Excerpt from Memorials of a Quiet Life, Vol. 1 of 2 Oh, that my past life, which has been so wonderfully blest by God, might be made useful for His service and lead others to more entire trust in Him. And in this feeling, when she was passing away from me, she permitted me, if I thought it could be made useful for others, to uplift the veil of\ her home life, and allow others to look in upon her private thoughts and meditations, and so endeavour to make them in some degree sharers in the blessing her dear life has been to me. My mother's existence was so bound up with that of the immediate circle of her beloved ones, especially with that of her husband; her sister, her brother-in-law Julius, and her two sisters-in-law, Lucy and Esther Hare, that the story of her life becomes of necessity that of their lives also, and this I have tried to tell in no words of my own, but in such selections from their common letters and journals as may give the truest picture of what they were. Genre: Social Science
ISBN: 9781330670217

Excerpt from Memorials of Oxford, Vol. 1 Amidst the variety of works relating to Oxford, the present will be found to be of a distinct character from all preceding publications: being the only embellished work which combines the academical with the civil history of the place; traces to their origin the various establishments, which have existed at different times; monastic, aularian, ecclesiastical, or collegiate; and unites, with illustrations of the most interesting vestiges of antiquity, all that is most necessary to be known respecting statistical, parochial, and municipal matters. One object has been, to compress within as small a space as possible the voluminous materials of former writers, and by bringing down the history to our own times to give the general reader a clearer insight into the ancient and present state of the university, city, and suburbs: another very important object, it is hoped, has been realized by the completion of this work; namely, that of preserving and transmitting to posterity, by the employment of the unrivalled talents of British artists, accurate delineations of all the most prominent and attractive scenes presented to the view in this our Athens: thus rescuing from oblivion those monuments of public and private munificence, which the hand of Time, and still more the restless spirit of Innovation, is continually sweeping away from our populous towns and cities.
