Mechanistic evaluation of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) flexible design equations was conducted by using 243 artificial pavement sections with various layer properties, roadbed soil modulus, and traffic volumes. A mechanistic-based modification procedure of the effects of the AASHTO drainage coefficient is presented. A nomograph for estimating the effects of drainage coefficients on the expected life of the pavement structures is also presented and discussed. Finally, the results of the backcalculated layer moduli of some of the Strategic Highway Research Program asphalt surfaced General Pavement Studies sections are presented and the accuracy of the values briefly discussed.

This report presents the analysis conducted on relating pavement performance or response measures and design considerations to specific pavement layers utilizing data contained in the Long-Term Pavement Performance Program National Information Management System. The goal of this research activity was to enhance implementation and use of the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide through improved materials characterizations. Specifically, the focus of this research activity was to identify the differences that exist between laboratory measured and backcalculated resilient moduli; determine the applicability of the C values, drainage coefficients, and relative damage factors that are included in the Design Guide; and provide procedures to adequately consider the seasonal variation of material properties as related to flexible pavement designs. Based on these results, design pamphlets have been prepared in support of the AASHTO Design Guide. These design pamphlets are documented and included in other reports. The results reported here form the basis and background for those design pamphlets.

This report provides an overview of the first 5 years of the Strategic Highway Research Program Long-Term Pavement Performance (SHRP-LTPP) program. The background, LTPP history, activities and approaches, and decision-making processes of the program are detailed. Included are summaries of the studies initiated for general and specific pavement types, the characterization of pavement materials, monitoring activities, the LTPP database and Information Management System, data analysis, traffic data collection and analysis, as well as a summary of the contributions made by international participants. The general LTPP program is described and the expected results, products, and benefits are also outlined.

The purpose of this report is to share the experience gained and lessons learned by research staff during early data analyses of the General Pavement Studies (GPS) and to recommend procedures for future analysts. A review of the techniques used is provided. Shortcomings of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Data Base, known at the time of early analyses, are discussed and data base expectations for future analyses were identified. Some interesting and useful distress and roughness prediction models were developed that illustrate the effects of several design variables. Other analytical procedures for developing predictive equations were identified and described, which may be of use in future analyses. Ten techniques used by the research staff for evaluating the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design equations are identified and recommendations for future evaluations provided.
