Excerpt from Manufacturing Arts in Ancient Times: With Special Reference to Bible History We have stated that the discovery and applica tion of metals is really the basis of the mechanical arts, for it puts into the hands of man proper tools, whereby he is enabled to overcome difficul ties which he could not possibly overcome without them; and indeed all advancement begins with improved tools; we will therefore, in the first place, consider the different metallic arts of which we have indications in ancient history, and then refer to some of the manufacturing arts that are of a chemical character, such as dyeing. Excerpt from Manufacturing Arts in Ancient Times: With Special Reference to Bible History Since the first issue of this volume, an important question has been raised by archæologists respecting some of the treasures found in the tombs at Mycenæ - that they are not of Grecian manufacture, but probably that the bodies found were those of some northern chiefs who had been killed or died in Greece, and were buried at Mycenae with their treasure. This supposition is supported by the fact that, early in this era, the Goths and other northern armies plundered Athens and many other renowned places in Greece. I think it probable that if chemistry was called in as evidence in such inquiries, it would, at least, yield much valuable circumstantial, if not positive, evidence as to whether the articles found alongside the bodies were of Grecian or Scandinavian manufacture.
