“If you are curious and open to the life around you, if you are troubled as to why, how and by whom political power is held and used, if you sense there must be good intellectual reasons for your unease, if your curiosity and openness drive you toward wishing to act with others, to ‘do something,’ you already have much in common with the writers of the three essays in this book.” — Adrienne Rich With a preface by Adrienne Rich, Manifesto presents the radical vision of four famous young rebels: Marx and Engels’ Communist Manifesto, Rosa Luxemburg’s Reform or Revolution and Che Guevara’s Socialism and Humanity.

Money and greed rule the world. They always have. As capitalism continues to become the world's economy, it also insinuates itself into our governments, our cultures, and our families. Without realizing it, the world has become a slave to wealth, power, and prestige and it drains us of our humanity. In The New Communist Manifesto, Mark Karol and Fred English shine light upon some of the darkest truths of life in a capitalist society. They show us a way to break free of the gilded chains that bind us and live a life filled with human connection and true community. Are you ready to free your mind?

Our doctrine does not pretend to be the intellectual vision of a great plan or of a design, but it is merely a method of research and of conception. It is not by accident that Marx spoke of his discovery as a guiding thread, and it is precisely for this reason that it is analogous to Darwinism, which also is a method...-from "Historical Materialism"One of the great European Marxists-in this volume, published in Italy in 1896 and in America in 1908-commemorates the then-upcoming 50th anniversary of Marx's Communist Manifesto, "our first unquestioned entrance into history." Explaining and elaborating upon Marx's philosophies, Labriola applies scientific and practical philosophy to Marxism, offering significant clarification, in layman's terms, of the Manifesto. Students of European and American socialism will find this an invaluable document, evidence of a fulcrum moment in global history, when socialism's prospects were far brighter than they are today.Philosopher and revolutionary ANTONIO LABRIOLA (1843-1904) is considered the father of Italian Marxism. Born in Cassino, Italy, he was educated at the University of Naples and wrote for numerous liberal political journals. Among his books are Problems of the Philosophy of History and Socialism (1889) and Correspondence on Philosophy and Socialism (1898).

In 1931-2 the first organization of Canadian left-wing intellectuals was founded. Led by historian Frank Underhill of the University of Toronto and law professor and poet Frank Scott of McGill University, the League for Social Reconstruction was critical of industrial capitalism and called for basic social and economic change through educational activity and parliamentary and constitutional channels. In the first history of this unique organization Michiel Horn outlines the League's aims and accomplishments and its ideological influence on the CCF and the NDP. Initially, the LSR avoided the term 'socialism' and remained uncommitted to any political part, although its choice of J.S. Woodsworth as honorary president made its sympathies clear. When, not long after the LSR's establishment, the CCF was founded, many League members joined it. An attempt to link the LSR openly with the CCF failed, but the League soon became known as the CCF's 'brain trust,' and the manifesto and programme adopted by the party in 1933 clearly reflected the influence of the LSR members. The League's own democratic socialist ideas were most fully stated in Social Planning for Canada (1935), Democracy Needs Socialism (1938), and in the pages of the Canadian Forum, acquired by the LSR in 1936. With the disillusionment of the later 1930s, the distraction of the war, and, most of all, the increased support enjoyed by the CCF after 1940, the LSR disappeared as a formal organization, but its ideas shaped a political tradition which found expression in the CCF and later the NDP.

"The socialist principles of the Communist Manifesto of 1848 have delivered oppression, poverty, and misery wherever they have been implemented. Yet remarkably, many of them endure in contemporary political discourse ... Gary Wolfram refutes these principles with a clear exposition of the capitalist system--the only economic system compatible with both social justice and individual liberty"--Page 4 of cover.
