Abū Ma’͑šar’s Great Introduction to Astrology (mid-ninth century) is the most comprehensive and influential text on astrology in the Middle Ages. In addition to presenting astrological doctrine, it provides a detailed justification for the validity of astrology and establishes its basis within the natural sciences of the philosophers. These two volumes provide a critical edition of the Arabic text; a facing English translation, which includes references to the divergences in the twelfth-century Latin translations of John of Seville and Hermann of Carinthia (Volume 1); and the large fragment of a Greek translation (edited by David Pingree). Comprehensive Arabic, English, Greek and Latin glossaries enable one to trace changes in vocabulary and terminology as the text passed from one culture to another. (Volume 2.)

The final chapters survey predictive systems used by ancient astrologers. Ancient natal and predictive techniques are applied to the charts and lives of over forty well-known historical and contemporary figures.Students and professional astrologers will find this book a treasure of astrological insight, technique, and new interpretative possibilities. Life begins for our characters on an island created especially for their occupation by the twelve Lords of the Zodiac and their King. Although continuous, the story is split up into six episodes, each one being an adventure set around two signs of the zodiac with their responding characters. I have brought in a little mythology, albeit with a generous helping of poetic licence, but feel that it works! The idea is to highlight the way two very different beings behave in various circumstances and their interaction with one another. Hopefully with each adventure, individual personality traits emerge as a chain of events unfolds. The story reaches a crescendo with the most important event of the year, when the King of the Zodiac visits the island to oversee the New Year festivities. A prologue explains how the island came about; how the Lords of the Zodiac found their ideal beings and its occupants are introduced one by one. The full thirteen representatives of the zodiac, when not ‘starring’ in a tale, all play supporting roles to extend their influence on the plots. I have tried to make the pairing up of the zodiac signs interesting, which in itself was a challenge. Read on and enjoy! Emma Dil

Stars and planets have always fascinated us. The steady majesty of these cosmic bodies have had a captivating effect on humans from ancient times. Astrology involves the forecasting of mundane events in one's life through analysing planets, fixed stars and their arbitrary combinations called constellation. Astrology uses a set of rules about the relative positions and movements of heavenly bodies to generate predictions and explanations for events and human personality traits. We can understand the unambiguous truth of how Astrology embodies a sense that life on Earth is affected by events in the wider universe, and how it offers hope of making sense of a bewilderingly complicated cosmos, and reassures us that we are a part of its grand design. The motivation behind this book is to establish a comprehensive, concise yet dynamic guide that can help anyone learn this science.

Jyotish, or Indian astrology, is an ancient and complex method of exploring the nature of time and space and its effect upon the individual. Formerly a closed book to the West, the subject has now been clarified and explained by Hart de Fouw and Dr. Robert Svoboda, two experts and long-term practitioners. In Light on Life they have created a complete and thorough handbook that can be appreciated and understood by those with very little knowledge of astrology.

The present volume offers the first critical edition, accompanied with English translation and commentary, of Sefer ha-Moladot, which addresses the doctrine of nativities and the system of continuous horoscopy in nativities, and of Sefer ha-Tequfah, which is devoted exclusively to continuous horoscopy in nativities. The doctrine of nativities makes predictions about the whole of an individual’s subsequent life on the basis of the natal chart, and the system of continuous horoscopy in nativities is concerned with the interval between life and death and makes predictions based mainly on anniversary horoscopes, which are juxtaposed with the natal horoscope. To Abraham Ibn Ezra’s mind, not only are these two doctrines the core of astrology; they also epitomize the praxis of the astrological métier. “Sela...has provided explanatory appendices and very interesting notes about Jewish attitudes toward the sciences and astrology in the middle ages.” Reference & Research Book News, 2013.
