LORD, STAND BY ME This book is more like a series of novellas, than a continuous novel; for it is the strange recorded moments of an eight year old child remembering tales she overheard her adult relatives, and their friends tell of hardships, rape murder, and other horrific crimes that occurred in the early forties in the deep South.

Sometimes the person you most need is the one least like you. Kathryn Davies is a bright young woman from a prominent Phoenix family. But after making a leap of faith at a Christian music fest, dropping out of med school, and moving to inner city Chicago, her family all but disowns her. When Kat discovers SouledOut Community Church, she longs to become a part of the multicultural church family. But her tendency to immediately say whatever sheÆs thinking steps on the toes of nearly everyone she meetsùespecially Avis Douglass. Avis has a strong faith, is the principal of one of ChicagoÆs highest performing elementary schools, and is a founding member of SouledOut. But the countryÆs economic downturn has thrown both her and her husbandÆs jobs in question. And Avis hasnÆt heard from her youngest daughter in monthsùan estrangement that gnaws at her every day. Where is God in this? KatÆs flamboyant zeal for living a ôradicalö Christian life is a stark contrast to AvisÆs more reserved faith. But in GodÆs timing, the two women discover they need each other in ways neither of them expected.

This book started with a conversation with a friend about how their life and my life could have been so different if certain things had happened at a certain point in time. I was motivated to explore that proposition, and my exploration led to the writing of this book. I began to realize that so many of us reach back into the past for answers, without realizing the amazing destiny that God has prepared for us, if we would just decline to reach back and not ponder the "what ifs." One of the realities of life is the difficult process of decision-making. Once a decision has been made, after extrapolating the best information available and at your disposal, there should be a limited amount of "what ifs."

Have you ever been in a physical or spiritual storm? Well, they are both similar. A physical storm is whereas there are dark clouds, thunder and lightning and the sun refuse to shine. There is also rain, and I mean rain, rain, and then more rain. A spiritual storm has some of the same characteristics. The most highly visible difference is that soon the physical storm has passed. A spiritual storm, one may have to weather it much longer. It wont be over until God say that it is. During this time we must praise, pray, and persevere. This is the only way that we will be able to weather the storm. When in the Midst of a Spiritual Storm: Praise, Pray, and Persevere will open our minds to the spirituality of Gods work. Whenever we experience these storms God is doing a great work in us and he is taking us to another level in him. The author portrays some of the many storms that she has had to endure as well as those of some biblical characters, and others who she has had contact with. The author guarantees that you will be able to see yourself or those who are close to you in some of these storms. You will be able to also see how storms can be weathered with Gods assistance. There are many obstacles in weathering storms and many spiritual disciplines that we must acquire. It is my prayer that we can all learn from this knowledge.

From a prominent young historian, the untold story of the rich variety of gay life in America in the 1970s Despite the tremendous gains of the LGBT movement in recent years, the history of gay life in this country remains poorly understood. According to conventional wisdom, gay liberation started with the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village in 1969. The 1970s represented a moment of triumph -- both political and sexual -- before the AIDS crisis in the subsequent decade, which, in the view of many, exposed the problems inherent in the so-called "gay lifestyle". In Stand by Me, the acclaimed historian Jim Downs rewrites the history of gay life in the 1970s, arguing that the decade was about much more than sex and marching in the streets. Drawing on a vast trove of untapped records at LGBT community centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia, Downs tells moving, revelatory stories of gay people who stood together -- as friends, fellow believers, and colleagues -- to create a sense of community among people who felt alienated from mainstream American life. As Downs shows, gay people found one another in the Metropolitan Community Church, a nationwide gay religious group; in the pages of the Body Politic, a newspaper that encouraged its readers to think of their sexuality as a political identity; at the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookstore, the hub of gay literary life in New York City; and at theaters putting on "Gay American History," a play that brought to the surface the enduring problem of gay oppression. These and many other achievements would be largely forgotten after the arrival in the early 1980s of HIV/AIDS, which allowed critics to claim that sex was the defining feature of gay liberation. This reductive narrative set back the cause of gay rights and has shaped the identities of gay people for decades. An essential act of historical recovery, Stand by Me shines a bright light on a triumphant moment, and will transform how we think about gay life in America from the 1970s into the present day.
