There was still daylight when we emerged from Underground and two police officers on horses were just passing us. "Let's follow them," said Granny, and then she whispered, "Everyone watching us may think that we are being escorted!" "What does it mean?" I was grateful that my younger brother asked this question. "It means that we are already so important!" Whoa! Imagine us: Granny in the middle-us leading her-her hands in our hands! You see, there were no hands free to take the picture of the whole scene.

Bes and Syrk are boarding the Wizz airplane and hey presto they are coming to London. The feather floating over passengers compartment takes away all fears of height and flight. It is a symbol of angelic presence, thus the feeling of safety and good mood prevails; the journey over many countries is much too short for many passengers, especially for Bes. The moment boys arrive to London Victoria they both make the same precious discovery that here must be the secret operation area for Santa. Indeed, whenever you come to London, please pay attention. You can watch this scenery from top deck of a bus arriving to Victoria Station. The girl on top of the monument will be in front her hands pointing precisely towards building with sloping roof and the building covered by the cap with a pick instead of a roof. It is so obvious that that girl is sending secret messages for someone who asks for messages from above. It can only be Santa; he needs a storage, smooth landing area, and distribution network for parcels. Thus, all this Christmas mystery is unrevealed now thanks to Bes and Syrk. All the fuss with delivery of gifts went unnoticed for centuries because of such perfect disguise of location the girl is the key point of this innocent collaboration London Victoria is the bridge between North Pole and Europe, and possibly the whole world. At Grannys home, Bes and Syrk try to outperform each other in the most creative way. During eating ice cream, Syrk - the victory personality manage to beat his cute younger brother with the help of angels; however at the end there was a little twist to the story. Difficult to judge even for Granny; did they both win or they lost, both? It is, however, worth to point out, that boys try to be also very useful. They were slightly to eager with cleaning the dishes, and . . . but it was that fear of not dropping anything, which caused the disaster. In addition, Syrk admits that he developed a great phobia of huge London Eye. However, what is the family for? Of course, the family can focus only on one thing how to care for each other. Granny and Bes have a lot of fun; they plan how to heal that ridiculous fear. Next day they will travel towards the area to give Syrk a gentle support there. Bes with Granny plan to pull Syrk on his roller-skates together; from Parliament, over Westminter Bridge towards London Eye. Syrk can try to resist the movement ahead towards his dread, and give last chance of existence to irrational fear. That evening Granny surprised both brothers by giving them all her weekly budget for financial training; under her scrutiny they should learn how to make the most of their assets; to learn how to choose value for money. If one tries to focus positively on economic issues in early age, this should push everybody to abundance; Granny calculates. In a very happy mood, everybody went to bed. Yet that surprised even Syrk. During that little disaster with porcelain, Granny uttered an awkward word about him - clumsy boy- and that started to hurt . . . enormously. Syrk remembered their commitment, the aim to live in the state of joy and happiness and managed to remove obtrusive unwanted thoughts from his mind. As a reward, he had a very nice dream, in which he experienced again his every success, or may be even more First thing in the morning, Syrk discovered the route for airplanes. Granny was very puzzled; she lived in this flat for years but never noticed anything unusual. She contemplates on that route, broadens the idea on life path in general . . .

As London sought to use the Olympics to achieve an ambitious programme of urban renewal in the relatively socially deprived East London it attracted global attention and sparked debate. This book provides an in-depth study of the transformation of East London as a result of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Government and event organisers use legacies of urban renewal to justify hosting the world’s leading sports mega-event, this book examines and evaluates those legacies. The London Olympics and Urban Development: the mega-event city is composed of new research, conducted by academics and policy makers. It combines case study analysis with conceptual insight into the role of a sports mega-events in transforming the city. It critically assesses the narrative of legacy as a framework for legitimizing urban changes and examines the use of this framework as a means of evaluating the outcomes achieved. This book is about that process of renewal, with a focus on the period following the 2012 Games and the diverse social, political and cultural implications of London’s use of the narrative of legacy.

Donald Osborne Finlay, a sporting name familiar to households in the 1930s, was Britain’s greatest athlete of the time; a hurdler whose triumphant exploits graced the sports pages and newsreels week after week. From a humble family background, he became a double Olympic medalist, European Champion, and Empire (Commonwealth) Champion; he also won the AAA 120 yards hurdles an unprecedented seven times in succession. Reporters ran out of superlatives to describe him. At the three Olympic Games in which he ran, he captained the British team twice, including the Berlin Games of 1936 in front of Adolf Hitler. An all-round sportsman, both track and field events came naturally to him as did football. He played for the country’s top amateur sides and turned out for Tottenham Hotspur in wartime matches. All the more remarkable is that Finlay competed at the very highest levels of international athletics at the same time as pursuing his demanding career as a Royal Air Force fighter pilot. Joining up as a boy apprentice in the mid-1920s, he qualified as a pilot before the start of the Second World War and found himself in the cockpit of a Supermarine Spitfire, commanding a squadron, during the Battle of Britain. Shot down and wounded in the Battle, he was soon back in the air and rose through the ranks to command a fighter wing in Burma, ending the war with several ‘kills’ to his name, as well as a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Force Cross to add to the medals won under less lethal circumstances on the running track. As a commander, his insistence on strict discipline often led to conflict with his subordinates, but there is no doubt that his methods got results. After the war, still serving in the RAF, Don returned to competitive athletics and was as fast and successful, if not more so, than ever. By then he was in his 40s, but age was no barrier and several of his greatest hurdling victories came when others would have been long retired from the track, against athletes often twenty years his junior. Don Finlay’s life was to end prematurely, and under tragic circumstances, but his legacy lives on as one of the finest athletes ever to wear the vest of Great Britain, as well as one of ‘The Few’.

The first edition of Olympic Cities, published in 2007, provided a pioneering overview of the changing relationship between cities and the modern Olympic Games. This substantially revised and much enlarged fourth edition builds on the success of its predecessors. The first of its three parts provides overviews of the urban legacy of the four component Olympic festivals: the Summer Games; Winter Games; Cultural Olympiads; and the Paralympics. The second part comprises systematic surveys of six key aspects of activity involved in staging the Olympics and Paralympics: finance; sustainability; the creation of Olympic Villages; security; urban regeneration; and tourism. The final part consists of ten chronologically arranged portraits of host cities from 1960 to 2032, with complete coverage of the Summer Games of the twenty-first century. As controversy over the growing size and expense of the Olympics, with associated issues of democratic accountability and legacy, continues unabated, this book’s incisive and timely assessment of the Games’ development and the complex agendas that host cities attach to the event will be essential reading for a wide audience. This will include not just urban and sports historians, urban geographers, event managers, and city planners, but also anyone with an interest in the staging of mega-events and concerned with building a better understanding of the relationship between cities, sport, and culture.

Drawing upon historical, cultural, economic and socio-demographic perspectives, this book examines the role of a sporting mega-event in promoting urban regeneration and social renewal. Comparing cities that have or will be hosting the event, it explores the political economy of the games and the changing role of the state in creating post-industrial metropolitan spaces. It evaluates the changing perceptions of the Olympic Games and the role of sport in the global media age in general and assesses the implication of 'mega-event' regeneration policies for local communities and their cultural, social and economic identities, with specific reference to east London and the Thames Gateway.
