This book is a catalog, a complete listing of all ships built by the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. This book covers all eras of the shipyard from its earliest days of creation and after purchase in 1913 by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and the final incarnation from 1963-1986 after its sale to the General Dynamics Corporation. Each ship is given several pages that include all relevant information regarding their construction such as dates, cost and name of sponsors, as well as particulars of dimensions and engines, etc. A brief 'biography' for each vessel, as far as has been possible, is given that includes the highlights of each ship's career ending with the ultimate disposition of the vessel. Each ship is also illustrated with several photographs of construction and as completed, etc. Within each biography for every ship can be found documented historical facts from period newspapers, magazines and other scholarly publications that flesh out relevant stories and information regarding the ships themselves, but also events such as worker's deaths and accidents and other pertinent anecdotal information.

Senator Ted Kennedy said, "My father worked here. The Fore River Shipyard will once again be a symbol of our leadership. And I will do all I can to insure that this leadership continues to thrive. The shipbuilding industry has been struggling in this country as a whole. Employment has dropped to a 40 year low. American-built ships carry less than one percent of world trade. That is unacceptable." Senator John McCain said, "We have an obligation to protect the taxpayers' dollars by ensuring that this is a viable project. It is my desire that the Quincy shipyard, into which the state of Massachusetts and the city of Quincy have invested significant resources, will be a successful venture." President Clinton said about shipbuilding and the Quincy yard in particular, "Shipbuilding is one of the keys to America's national defense and helping our shipbuilders succeed commercially is an important goal of defense conversion. This administration is committed to preserving highly skilled American jobs and we believe that American shipbuilding can compete and win in world markets." What happened...? SHIPBUILDING USED TO BE ONE OF THE TOP FIVE INDUSTRIES IN THE U.S.A.

This work offers a new and comprehensive account of the fastest and most beautiful sailing ships ever built. It explores the quest for speed on the seas from the early 1800s through the fast-paced times of the 1850s spurred on by the California Gold Rush of 1849. Not only are the career details of such noted ships as the Flying Cloud and Challenge discussed in detail, but they are also put in context with the times in which they operated. Their builders in East Coast states from Maine to Florida are discussed in detail, as are the men, and a woman in one instance, who commanded and manned these ships. The book documents the roles that owners and shipping agents played, what kinds of cargo the ships carried worldwide and the unusual trades in which they participated.
