It was the First World War’s largest seaborne invasion and the Irish were at the forefront. Recruited in Ireland, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were ordered to spearhead the invasion of Gallipoli in Turkey. Deadlocked in trench warfare on the Western Front, the British High Command hoped the assault would knock Germany’s ally out of the war. Using letters and photographs, this book tells the story of the ‘Dubs’ officers and men as they set off on what was presented as a great adventure to win glory and capture Constantinople. Accompanied by the Royal Munster Fusiliers, packed aboard the SS River Clyde, the ‘Dubs’ landed from ships’ boats on the fiercely defended beach at Sedd-el-Bahr. The song The Foggy Dew says, ‘It were better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sedd-el-Bahr.’ This book tells the story of the forgotten Irishmen who died beneath a Turkish sky in what was Ireland’s D-Day.

In the dark corners of the city, conspiracy and assassination are a means to an end. Those who stand at the top pull the strings in whatever manner they desire, unopposed by their subordinates, and unchallenged by ethics. But some people are difficult to tame, as not all humans are created equal within the confines of Menilax. A rare gift has spread throughout the Broken Sector, allowing the less fortunate to control parts of existence that normal people could only dream of. But they are tired, poor and homeless, and have been abandoned by the rest of the city due to their volatility. Grey is a man looking to strengthen his constituents and rebuild the Sector, working as much as he can before his time comes to an end. With a track record of blood and shadow, he’s hoping that with enough good deeds he can redeem himself. To what lengths he will go to remains to be seen, but is it remotely possible for good works to cancel out a history of dark deeds? Where does one draw the line, for who can be forgiven, and who must be damned for their sins? While Grey grew up fending for himself in a secluded, apathetic environment, Janus enrolled with STARCOV, a covert division of the military, specialising in espionage, tactics and foreign surveillance. Her world is torn asunder when her little brother is abducted, leaving her mind to unravel at a frightening pace. Not only must she deal with Oscar's disappearance, but Janus is left with years of operational conditioning, skills not applicable to life outside of the unit. Janus plans to take matters into her own hands to take back control, to see Oscar returned home in one piece. Will her trauma consume her from the inside? Or will she beat the odds and succeed despite her shortcomings?

It all began thirty years ago on Mars, with a greenperson. But by the time it all finished, the town of Desolation Road had experienced every conceivable abnormality; from Adam Black’s Wonderful Travelling Chautauqua and Educational ’Stravaganza (complete with its very own captive angel), to the Astounding Tatterdemalion Air Bazaar. Its inhabitants ranged from Dr. Alimantando, the town’s founder and resident genius, to the Babooshka, a barren grandmother who just wants her own child – grown in a fruit jar; from Rajendra Das, mechanical hobo who has a mystical way with machines to the Gallacelli brothers, identical triplets who fell in love with – and married – the same woman. REVIEWS “Ian McDonald’s Desolation Road is one of my most personally influential novels. It’s an epic tale of the terraforming of Mars, whose sweep captures the birth and death of mythologies, economics, art, revolution, politics... Desolation Road pays homage to David Byrne’s Catherine Wheel, to Ray Bradbury’s entire canon and to Jack Vance, blending all these disparate creators in a way that surprises, delights, then surprises and delights again.” – Cory Doctorow (Boing Boing) “McDonald’s first novel, it absolutely bowled me over when it came out, and while I have read everything he’s published since, and admire all of it and like most of it, this remains my favourite... some of the most beautiful prose imaginable... If you ever want to demonstrate how different science fiction can be, what an incredible range and sweep of things are published with a little spaceship on the spine, Desolation Road is a shining datapoint, because it isn’t like anything else and yet it is coming from a knowledge of what the genre can do and can be and making something new out of it.” – Jo Walton (Tor.com) “This is the kind of novel I long to find yet seldom do. Desolation Road is a rara avis... Extraordinary and more than that!” – Philip José Farmer

This is the biography of Henry Crowe whose career encompassed time as an infantryman with the Royal Irish Regiment during the First World War, an observer with the RFC and fledgling RAF, a pilot in Ireland at the time of the Irish War of Independence, a photographic officer and flight commander in Iraq, and Commanding Officer of Nos. 23 and 74 Squadrons. His memories of time spent in Iraq and on the North West Frontier between the wars have a real resonance today, illustrating just how little has changed in some respects.Henry served at the Air Ministry in various positions and concluded his service with the RAF in India, retiring as an Air Commodore in 1945. He had a keen interest in photography and took hundreds of images of the places he served, the aircraft he flew and saw, and the people he met. With an early Bell and Howell cine camera he also captured film of Malta, Iraq and India between the wars. As a photographic record alone this book is fascinating. But Henry wrote about his experiences as well and it is his memoirs that form the backbone of this biography, written with the full backing of his family.Henry Crowe was highly decorated and especially well thought of during the course of his career; reading Bob Crosseys account of his fascinating life, it is clear to see why.
