Excerpt from James Watt When the publishers asked me to write the Life of Watt, I declined, stating that my thoughts were upon other matters. This settled the question, as I supposed, but in this I was mistaken. Why shouldn't I write the Life of the maker of the steam-engine, out of which I had made fortune? Besides, I knew little of the history of the Steam Engine and of Watt him self, and the surest way to obtain knowledge was to comply with the publisher's highly complimentary request. In short, the subject would not down, and finally, I was compelled to write again, telling them that the idea haunted me, and if they still desired me to undertake it, I should do so with my heart in the task. I now know about the steam-engine, and have also had revealed to me one of the finest characters that ever graced the earth. For all this I am deeply grateful to the publishers. I am indebted to friends, Messrs. Angus Sinclair and Edward R. Cooper, for editing my notes upon Scientific and Mechanical points. The result is this volume. If the public, in reading, have one tithe of the pleasure I have had in writing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memorials: Of the Lineage, Early Life, Education, and Development of the Genius of James Watt Merits of so transcendent a character surely claimed the unanimous testimony of his country's gratitude. AS yet, however, no public recognition of them had been made. It was only natural and becoming that such a testimony should originate in the town, and in the heart of the community which enjoyed the privilege of num bering james watt among its sons. Beyond the general advantages derived from his prolific invention that were shared in common with the rest of the nation, the town of Greenock lay under signal obliga tions to the generosity as well as the genius of Watt. The adapta tion of the steam-engine to the purposes of Navigation had given a remarkable impulse to its trade. The new requirements of this important branch of industry had caused the establishment of Found ries, Forges, and Engine-works, till then almost unknown in this portion of the country. A spirit of active enterprise had been evoked - not unobserved by the great mechanician himself; who, anxious that it might be rightly animated, - that the awakened ingenuity might be William Street, known as The Greenodc Tavern, Alan Swan. Excerpt from Lives of Boulton and Watt: Principally From the Original Soho Mss The present volume concludes the author's Lives of the Engineers.' Its preparation was begun many years since. The favourable reception given to the Life of George Stephenson, ' the principal improver and introducer of the locomotive engine, encouraged the author to follow it by a Life of James Watt, the prin cipal inventor and introducer of the condensing engine. On making inquiries, however, he found that the subject had already been taken in hand by J. P. Muir head, Esq., the literary executor of the late Mr. Watt, of Aston Hall, near Birmingham. As Mr. Muirhead was in all respects entitled to precedence, and was, moreover, in possession of the best sources of informa tion, the author's contemplated Life of Watt was abandoned, and he satisfied himself with embodying the substance of the materials he had collected in a review of Mr. Muirhead's work, which appeared in the Quarterly Review for July, 1858.
