Excerpt from Life of General Sir Robert Wilson, Vol. 1 The Narrative of the French Invasion of Russia. In 1812, was the only finished work among the masses of mss. Devised by his will; consisting of journals, narratives, note and anecdote books, letters from and to persons of both sexes, of all ranks and degrees, and of many nations - English, French, Russians, Germans, Poles, Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Spanish Ame ricans, Greeks, Turks, Egyptians, &c. &c. In compliance with this solemn charge, before the publication of the Russian Campaign the sanction of her Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs was asked and Obtained. A copy was transmitted through the Russian Ambassador to S. Petersburg; the wishes of the Emperor were ascertained and as far as possible complied with; and the work was published in the spring of 1860. It was received with universal favour. In the words of one of its critics, it at once placed Sir Robert Wilson in the first rank of military writers.
