These are records generated and maintained by the Iowa Library Commission while providing local support for the American Library Association's Library War Service, an initiative to provide books and library services to American soldiers in training camps and overseas service during World War I. The top coordinator's for the book and cash collection efforts in Iowa were the Library Commission's president Johnson Brigham and secretary Julia A. Robinson. Included in this collection are correspondence; instructional, planning, and publicity materials; and records of money and books collected from individual Iowa communities. This last set of materials often includes names of individuals that contributed in a given community. Also housed with these records are several files related to the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense which registered women for placement in war service libraries and other civilian posts during the war.
