After entering the ministry from Bethel A.M.E. Church in Wilmington, Delware, Coppin served in Baltimore and in Philadelphia where he became editor of the A.M.E. Church Review. In 1900, he was elected bishop, first serving in South African and later in the American South, Midwest, and in Canada.
