"A celebration of the sport in the land of 10,000 lakes and beyond, where the fish fry is a near-holy Friday ritual, the running of smelt heralds spring, and a village of ice-fishing huts springs up on every frozen lake, this irresistible book tells the full story from trivia to sacred tradition. Eric Dregni, who has entertained countless readers with enlightening tales of Midwest marvels, here shows his considerable skills as a raconteur and cultural historian of the fun and the facts of fishing in the Great Lakes region. Fishing contests and taxidermy, lures and earthworms, fishing scenes on beer cans, and the peculiar genre of fishing photographs: no detail is too small, reflection too deep, or bridge too far to escape his eye and ready wit, from gear madness to true grit, angling heroics to solitary pleasures, small-town festivals to sport-fishing meccas. And he has the images to prove it. Lavishly illustrated with postcards, advertisements, historical prints, and tourist snapshots, this book is an always fascinating, occasionally hilarious, and often oddly informative compendium of fishing lore destined to reel in the uninitiated and to occupy the aficionado in those long, empty hours between seasons.A celebration of the sport in the land of 10,000 lakes and beyond, where the fish fry is a near-holy Friday ritual, the running of smelt heralds spring, and a village of ice-fishing huts springs up on every frozen lake, this irresistible book tells the full story from trivia to sacred tradition. A job in Philipsburg, a rough mining town, leads Annie to her homestead at last. Joseph Case. A Civil War Veteran who drifts west to fight Indian Wars. He also ends up in Philipsburg, hired by the cook camps to hunt meat. By a strange twist of fate, Annie saves Joseph from drowning. Love bloomswill territorial laws prevent a marriage between the interracial couple? Sean Patricks. A firefighter in the Sawmill Complex Fire of 2007. Sean helps save a historical cabin. He returns with his 12-year-old twin sons for a fishing vacation. The twins do more than fish. They uncover a path to the past in the spirits of Annie and Joseph. A fine thread weaves smoothly throughout this story. Is the past part of the presentor the present part of the past? You decide.

Go hunting and fishing with Mike Yurk in Hunters Moon, Fishermans Sun. It is a collection of twenty two stories that will take you from Alaska to Key West with a lot of time in the upper Mid West where Mike grew up and still lives. It begins with memories of opening day of the fishing season and ends with a long winter followed by two more opening days. In between we fish for halibut in Alaska, hunt pheasants in South Dakota and get a fish fry in Key West. We go back with Mike to when he was a boy and young man learning to hunt. He takes us with him hunting for big ducks on a big lake, a pond where he hunted for geese, the joys of hunting on Saturdays, and shooting rabbits in the snow. We go ice fishing when the walleyes went nuts on his favorite home lake and again on a northern Minnesota lake where friends gather in the winter for a special ice fishing event. The stories move from the past to the present. There are memories of Lake Michigan as a boy to many years later catching salmon there. There are recollections of fishing with his grandfather and father on a beloved river to now teaching his grandson to fish for bass. There are the days of unlimited joy of summer vacation as a boy to a perfect summer day catching smallmouth bass as a much older fisherman. The stories are more then just catching fish or shooting game. They are about people, both in the past and present, and the impact they have on the days of a hunters moon or a fishermans sun.
