Genre: Business & Economics
ISBN:

"Dynamite harkens back to an era of American capitalism a little less glossy, a little bloodier, and with striking parallels to today."--Feminist Review Labor disputes have produced more violence over a longer period of time in the United States than in any other industrialized country in the world. From the 1890s to the 1930s, hardly a year passed without a serious—and often deadly—clash between workers and management. Written in the 1930s, and with a new introduction by Mike Davis, Dynamite recounts a fascinating and largely forgotten history of class and labor struggle in America’s industrial beginnings. It is the story of brutal exploitation, massacres, and judicial murders of the workers. It is also the story of their response: when peaceful strikes yielded no results, workers fought back by any means necessary. Louis Adamic has written the classic story of labor conflict in America, detailing many episodes of labor violence, including the Molly Maguires, the Homestead Strike, Pullman Strike, Colorado Labor Wars, the Los Angeles Times bombing, as well as the case of Sacco and Vanzetti.

A princess thinks she was a bird, a coconut that cost a thousand rupees, and a shepherd with a bag of words...Kings and misers, princes and paupers, wise men and foolish boys, the funniest and oddest men and women come alive in this sparkling new collection of stories. The clever princess will only marry the man who can ask her a question she cannot answer; the orphan boy outwits his greedy uncles with a bag of ash; and an old couple in distress is saved by a magic drum. Sudha Murty's grandparents told her some of these stories when she was a child; others she heard from her friends from around the world. These delightful and timeless folktales have been her favourites for years, and she has recounted them many times over to the young people in her life. With this collection, they will be enjoyed by many more readers, of all ages. Age group of target audience is 8+.

Measure Theory and Integration

Measure Theory and Integration
Author: Michael Eugene Taylor
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
Total Pages: 338
Release: 2006
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 0821841807

This self-contained treatment of measure and integration begins with a brief review of the Riemann integral and proceeds to a construction of Lebesgue measure on the real line. From there the reader is led to the general notion of measure, to the construction of the Lebesgue integral on a measure space, and to the major limit theorems, such as the Monotone and Dominated Convergence Theorems. The treatment proceeds to $Lp$ spaces, normed linear spaces that are shown to be complete (i.e., Banach spaces) due to the limit theorems. Particular attention is paid to $L2$ spaces as Hilbert spaces, with a useful geometrical structure. Having gotten quickly to the heart of the matter, the text proceeds to broaden its scope. There are further constructions of measures, including Lebesgue measure on $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. There are also discussions of surface measure, and more generally of Riemannian manifolds and the measures they inherit, and an appendix on the integration ofdifferential forms. Further geometric aspects are explored in a chapter on Hausdorff measure. The text also treats probabilistic concepts, in chapters on ergodic theory, probability spaces and random variables, Wiener measure and Brownian motion, and martingales. This text will prepare graduate students for more advanced studies in functional analysis, harmonic analysis, stochastic analysis, and geometric measure theory.

Release: 2023-07-13
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 1470473690

Ricci flow is a powerful analytic method for studying the geometry and topology of manifolds. This book is an introduction to Ricci flow for graduate students and mathematicians interested in working in the subject. To this end, the first chapter is a review of the relevant basics of Riemannian geometry. For the benefit of the student, the text includes a number of exercises of varying difficulty. The book also provides brief introductions to some general methods of geometric analysis and other geometric flows. Comparisons are made between the Ricci flow and the linear heat equation, mean curvature flow, and other geometric evolution equations whenever possible. Several topics of Hamilton's program are covered, such as short time existence, Harnack inequalities, Ricci solitons, Perelman's no local collapsing theorem, singularity analysis, and ancient solutions. A major direction in Ricci flow, via Hamilton's and Perelman's works, is the use of Ricci flow as an approach to solving the Poincaré conjecture and Thurston's geometrization conjecture.
