Excerpt from Lectures on Pathological Anatomy It was also, at first, my intention to have illustrated the descriptions by figures; but I found that drawings of diseased viscera showed little that is characteristic, without the aid of colour, which would have made the work too expensive. My thanks are due to my friend Mr Thomas Eastes, m.e., for his kindness in helping me to revise many of the proof-sheets, in others of which the critic of orthography will find some faults, should he read as carefully as Mr Eastes would have done. Excerpt from Lectures on Anatomy, Surgery, and Pathology: Including Observations on the Nature and Treatment of Local Diseases Surgery and Medicine are essentially, what the French Republic was declared to be, "one and indivisible." Custom, however, has separated them into two parts, and I have now to speak of those diseases of which surgeons undertake the management. These are, for the most part, external injuries, such as are the result of accident, or such as require operations; but you will find these external diseases often arise from constitutional causes, and where a disease arises from the state of the general health, you must remove the cause before you can cure it. Again, when they arise from accident, you will find that local disease will disturb the whole constitution; consequently, if I were to begin to speak of local diseases, in the first instance, I should be perpetually adverting to the general system, and.it will be better, therefore, that I should first direct your attention to the nature of the constitutional affections which are produced, or which may be produced by local diseases. These constitutional affections having been previously considered, the subject of local diseases will be rendered simple, and a great deal of repetition will thus be saved. The Pathology of Normalcy

The Pathology of Normalcy

The legendary social psychologist and New York Times–bestselling author meditates on ideas of mental health and normalcy in contemporary society. At the beginning of the 1950s, Erich Fromm increasingly questioned whether people in contemporary industrial society were mentally healthy. Eventually the topic of various lectures, Fromm’s new social psychoanalytic approach enabled him to further develop the psychoanalytic method into a comprehensive critique of the pathology of the “normal,” socially adjusted human being. He was thus able to subject to a radical analysis the widespread strivings that dominate behavior in society—and therefore question what is “normal,” what is beneficial to mental health, and what makes people ill. In The Pathology of Normalcy, Fromm examines the concepts of mental health and mental illness in modern society. He discusses, through a series of lectures, subjects including a frame of reference for evaluating mental health, the relationship between mental health issues and alienation, and the connection between psychological and economic theory. Finally, he elucidates how humanity can overcome “the insane society,” as well as its own innate laziness.
