Excerpt from Land, Labour, and Gold; Or Two Years in Victoria, Vol. 1 of 2: With Visits to Sydney and Van Diemen's Land This edition has been delayed some time in the hope that I should be able to record the settlement of the great question of the colony - the Land Question; but although the Home Government in May, 1856, granted to the Australian colonies, in their new constitutions, full power to deal with the waste lands, the squatter influence has hitherto prevailed to prevent the final completion of that great and most vital measure. The battle of interests alluded to in the original preface to these volumes, is now fighting, and bids fair to be of some duration. Without waiting further I have, therefore, wholly revised this work, putting out matter which has lost its value, from the progress of events, but retaining the picture of the colony at the period of my visit as a history of that singular time, which the public will long look back to with curiosity and surprise. In a new chapter I have traced, from authentic sources, the progress of the colony up to this time, - so that the world will be able to behold its most recent features.
