Margaret Rose Ngawaka- Iwi (Tribe)-Ngati Porou, Kahungunu, and Rongomaiwahine I live on a 148-acre offshore island on the west side of Great Barrier Island, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, where my husband and I have raised our seven children. Living here so remote has the challenge of not being able to attend courses of learning on the mainland (New Zealand). But I continue to strive for knowledge and understanding and seek out whatever opportunities come my way. I learned raranga in 1998, but it has been in my blood since birth. My journey with harakeke is entwined with my whakapapa (family history). When I learned to plait, I found an aunt I have never met who was an expert weaver of her time. When I learned piupiu (traditional Maori kilt), I was given a photo of my great-grandmother wearing her piupiu and learned she was a matriarch weaver of her time. This confirmed also that she was giving me permission to carry on with this treasured skill that she once excelled in. When I learned taniko, it was my mother's sister, Aunt Hiria Okeroa Waaka, who taught me. My aunt Hiria has fond memories as a young girl being chosen to go pick kiekie and harakeke with her grandmother (my great-grandmother). This reminds me of my duty and responsibility to teach raranga and inspire hope for future mokopuna-grandchildren/posterity. There are many women more experienced and skilled than I who could have written this step-by-step book. I feel so blessed to have seen this opportunity and ran with it. I always say, "If it's meant to be-it will be."

This book is a mosaic or quilt of folk art around the world, from polychrome clay figures made in IzĂșcar de Matamoros, Puebla (Mexico) to the baskets Maori women create in New Zealand, from Japanese lacquer work and decorated paddles to black dolls in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The creative impulse found in three continents, four countries, and four geographical regions are juxtaposed to make up a harmonious whole. The book carries out a detailed dissection of a variety of ethnic, racialized, and gender representations in their contemporary forms.

The bag, and the handbag in particular, has achieved high fashion status, but what's the cultural and historical significance behind the bag? Why do we use them and not just have pockets? Why don't men routinely use them? Does every culture have a tradition of using bags? The Auckland Museum exhibition Carried Away: Bags Unpacked is a collection of 150 bags from their Applied Arts and Design Collection, a nationally significant research archive of key makers and designers from New Zealand and abroad, and this book serves as both a photographic record and an exploration of the symbolism and power behind bags. Grace Lai, curator of the collection, unpacks issues carried by the bag: of colonialism, the economy, consumption, gender politics, and whakapapa. Issues that remain relevant to not only museums and their collections but also to society today.

The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the earth's surface. Comprising thousands of islands and hundreds of cultural groups, Polynesia and Micronesia cover a large part of this vast ocean, from the dramatic mountains of Hawaii to the small, flat coral islands of Kiribati. Including both traditional and contemporary arts, this book introduces the rich artistic traditions of these two regions, traditions that have had a considerable impact on western art in the twentieth century through the influence of artists such as Gauguin. Instead of looking at Polynesia and Micronesia separately, the book focuses on the artistic types, styles, and concepts that they share, placing each in its wider cultural context. From the textiles of Tonga to the canoes of Tahiti, Adrienne Kaeppler looks at religious and sacred rituals and objects, carving, architecture, tattooing, personal ornaments, basket-making, clothing, textiles, fashion, the oral arts, dance, music and musical instruments - even canoe-construction - to provide the ultimate introduction to the rich and vibrant artistic cultures of the Polynesian and Micronesian islands.
