Volume three in this series focuses on the basic principles of light pulse compression through chirp generation and compensation inside and outside the laser cavity. Traces the developmental of light railways from before the 1896 Light Railways Act, and places the failure of the subsequent expansion in the context of financial problems of the rail industry as a whole, due most especially to the concurrent rise of motor traffic. Assesses the impact on the remote areas served, and follows the form of transportation to its terminal decline between the wars. For historians and rail buffs. Distributed by St. Martin's. "Holding the Line tells the story of the revival of the Kent and East Sussex Railway. Beginning with a brief history of the railway prior to 1961, it goes on to describe in detail the first ten years of the preservation project: from the aims and activities of the early volunteer working parties through the arrival of the first locomotives and attempts to raise funds to purchase the line and rolling stock, to the re-opening in 1974. It ends by linking this early period of the company's history to the present day." "The charm and appeal of the K&ESR, Tenterden and the Rother Valley are described, and the story of the growth and development of the scheme is viewed in terms of the personalities involved and the volunteer way of life. The theme of 'holding the line', despite considerable difficulties, runs throughout. Many previously little-reported facts dispel any notion that the project was moribund until the early 1970s. This is, in particular, achieved by emphasizing the role and determination of the volunteers." "Nick Pallant is one of the railway's long-time supporters who, in his own words, 'had been there at least some of the time' and had known 'how very much of themselves others had put into trying to re-open the line'."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Light Railway, was one of the lines managed and operated by Colonel Holman Fred Stephens from his office in Salford Terrace in Tonbridge Kent. It was a revival of the long disused Potteries Shrewsbury & North Wales Railway, a railway that went bankrupt shortly after opening in the mid 1860s and was left derelict for forty years. The railway reopened in 1911 to much local rejoicing, however the company was in financial difficulties by the 1920s and withdrew its passenger services in the early 1930s. During the Second World War the army took over the railway, constructing ammunition and stores depots along its entire length. After the war the railway continued to be operated by the army until closed in 1960, when it was handed over to the Western Region of British Railways for demolition. The author has researched the history of this fascinating bucolic railway over many years. In this new book he presents much previously unpublished information and many fascinating insights into the railway’s complicated history.
