Following on from Kakuro 1, this book contains more of the addictive puzzles that have hooked an army of fans. Everyone in the UK has heard of Sudoku, but in Japan, home of Sudoku, Kakuro is a far bigger phenomenon, appearing in over 70 different magazines and newspapers with over one million Kakuro books sold to date. A daily Kakuro puzzle started appearing in The Guardian in mid -September and in the last few weeks this challenging puzzle has won over thousands of new fans. While Sudoku uses a straightforward grid, a Kakuro consists of filled and empty cells similar to a crossword puzzle. Some black cells contain a diagonal slash with numbers in them, the clues, creating exciting, addictive puzzles that will allow the growing army of Sudoku fans to stay one step ahead of the game.

A family desperate for money. A child prodigy—the heir to the family fortune—missing. Riverview House holds many secrets. Mark Newlin is a history professor at Gold College in southwestern Illinois. When tragedy thrusts him into a life he doesn't want, well-meaning friends send him to a bed-and-breakfast on the river for rest and healing. But Riverview House is not the peaceful retreat described in the brochure. A nineteenth-century mansion built on the upper Mississippi River, for years it was the symbol of the Channon family's prestige and their right to a place in American aristocracy. After several generations, the family has lost most of its money, and none of its arrogance. And the future of everything depends on one man. The heir to the Channon fortune. Whom no one has heard from in years. Mark and his assistant Sean Merritt find themselves in the midst of an unusual family gathering. Against his will, Mark is drawn into the Channon family's struggles. And as his concern for the heir's welfare increases, he discovers the power to heal in the most unlikely place.

What kakuro fan could resist this huge collection? Featuring 940 grids in varying levels of difficulty, it has more than enough to satisfy even the most avid enthusiast. Half sudoku, half crossword, language-free kakuro is set to become the next worldwide puzzle phenomenon. The basics are simple: just fill in the empty squares using numbers from 1 to 9 so that the sum of each horizontal set of squares equals the clue on its left, and the sum of each vertical set of squares equals the clue on the top. No number can appear more than once in any sum. An introduction explains all the rules, gives good solving tips, and takes beginners through a sample puzzle.

When the Guardian relaunched their new Berliner sized paper this autumn, they chose Kakuro as one of their launch vehicles. Kakuro (called Kakro in Japan and Cross Sums in the USA) has become the new number puzzle phenomenon gathering millions of fans worldwide. Older than puzzle favourite Sudoku and played for many years in Japan, Kakuro is best described as a kind of mathematical crossword. Like Sudoku, Kakuro is played on grids of varying sizes. Each grid consists of blank and filled squares similar to a crossword puzzle and the object of Kakuro is to fill in each of the white squares with the numbers 1-9 so that each set of blanks adds up to the total to the left or above. The same number cannot be used more than once in each set. Some filled in squares have a diagonal slash across them with two numbers - one above and one below the diagonal. These are the 'clues' - the number in the top right corner relates to a horizontal 'clue' and the one in the bottom left corner relates to a vertical one. The Guardian Book of Kakuro features over 100 different number puzzles, graduating from 40 simple number games to 20 puzzles of medium difficulty and then finally featuring some really tough puzzle games for those who have mastered the skill. Each puzzle has been hand crafted by a Japanese inventor and is wholly original. The Guardian Book of Kakuro includes four pages of 'How To', explaining the rules and featuring example puzzles, plus a page of unique number combinations.
