Sedimentary rocks are created by the deposition or accumulation of material, organic particles, or minerals in bodies of water and formed at the Earth’s surface. Sedimentation is the name given to the formation of these rocks. Limestone, dolostone, clay, sandstone, sandstone, and shale are some common sedimentary rocks formed out of the sedimentation and cementation processes that cause these particles, which can be coarse, medium, or fine-grained or stratified according to their conditions of formation. The first section of this book discusses different aspects of sedimentary rocks. Aquifers are vital resources of freshwater in many countries. However, such groundwater resources are limited, scarce, and unevenly distributed over the Earth’s surface. The second section of this book discusses the basaltic aquifer and aquifers in South Africa.

A critical transition period in the archaeology and history of Palestine—the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age—is described in detail from the perspective of a group of sites in the Baq'ah Valley. A major emphasis is on how scientific techniques, including magnetic location of undisturbed burial deposits and analytical reconstruction of very early industries, can be effectively integrated into an archaeological project. Contrary to traditional views, the evidence supports a relatively peaceful development within a single cultural tradition rather than the intrusion of a new people or segment of the existing population, by invasion, migration, or revolt. This is an open access book. Rocscience is delighted to announce the Rocscience International Conference 2023 (RIC2023), an in-person gathering to be held from April 24–26, 2023, in Toronto, Canada. RIC2023's primary objective is to bring geotechnical professionals together to meet and exchange ideas on important issues and developments in geotechnical engineering, particularly combinations of emerging and mature technologies. The geotechnical industry is rapidly evolving. Engineers are more connected through technology, technology is becoming more integrated than ever, and methods combining these technologies are becoming more prevalent. This movement towards combining technologies led us to the conference theme, “Synergy in Geotechnical Engineering – Success Beyond Individual Technologies.” We believe the time is right to highlight how far the industry has come with various technologies and continues to develop. The conference aims to create an environment that fosters new perspectives and helps attendees delve deeper into innovative approaches. During RIC2023, Rocscience will award the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Medal to Dr. Norbert Morgenstern, an internationally recognized authority in the engineering community. As both a practitioner and educator, Dr. Morgenstern’s contributions to the geotechnical community continue to benefit engineers worldwide, and he will give an address on his career. In addition to keynotes by Dr. Morgernstern and four other distinguished speakers, there will be several technical and networking sessions.

This monograph presents the results of over 10 years of paleontological and geological survey in the Baynunah Formation of the United Arab Emirates. Exposed widely in western Abu Dhabi Emirate, the Baynunah Formation and its fossils provide the only record of terrestrial environments and evolution in the Arabian Peninsula during the late Miocene epoch (12-5 Ma). This volume describes new fossils collected since 2002, presented systematically by taxon, and including mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates, as well as fossil trackways. The discoveries are framed within the results of new geological, geochemical, and geochrononological analyses, providing an updated and synthetic view of the age, environments, and biogeographic relationships of this important fossil assemblage.
