The Province was governed by the Charter of William and Mary and had been since 1691, when the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in New England and the Colony of New Plymouth in New England, together with the Province of Maine and the territory called Acadia or Nova Scotia, were united under the name of the Prov ince of Massachusetts Bay in New England.
