Jaka Someh became a great warrior, but his heart was still kind and not arrogant. Even though he has defeated many evil martial figures who are known to be powerful and feared. Jaka Someh has a sincere and patient heart. He tends to prefer to give in and avoid conflict with others. So that makes him a less assertive person. Not firm in making decisions. Perhaps because of his lack of firmness, Jaka Someh felt bad for rejecting Pak Rohadi's request to marry his daughter who was pregnant out of wedlock. Mr. Rohadi's daughter named Asih. Asih is pregnant and left by her lover. Asih is actually a beautiful woman and has even become a village flower. Asih actually didn't want to marry Jaka Someh, but in order to save the dignity of the family she was forced to follow her father's wish, to marry Jaka Someh. Although Jaka Someh is only a substitute husband for Asih, Jaka Someh tries to love Asih with all his heart, but unfortunately, Asih's attitude often humiliates Jaka Someh, who has officially become her husband. Jaka Someh's appearance is indeed too simple, making him a lot of belittled and considered stupid by others. Even by Asih, his own wife. Who had the heart to betray his holy love. Even though Jaka Someh has sacrificed a lot for Asih. He always tries hard to always make his wife happy, but still Asih doesn't want to respect Jaka Someh. Even Asih had the heart to cheat on Jaka Someh. Two years after her marriage to Jaka Someh, Asih is reunited with her former lover who once got her pregnant. They also re-establish a love affair. Their affair was finally discovered by Jaka Someh. Jaka Someh felt very angry, confused, sad and disappointed. Jaka Someh wanted to kill the man who had trampled on his pride. But he could not do it, because he could not bear to his wife and stepson whom he loved very much. Sad, angry, disappointed but trapped by sincere feelings of love and respect. Jaka Someh became very confused and indecisive. So what will Jaka Someh do to deal with his troubled household? Should he divorce his wife? Or did he repay his wife's affair with another affair? or just go, wander far away from Asih who has had the heart to have an affair? Will his household problems turn him into a different person? On the other hand, as a warrior, Jaka Someh is required to defend and protect people who are experiencing oppression from gangs of criminals. At that time a powerful warrior appeared who had torn apart the martial world. His name is Ki Jabrik. Ki Jabrik is the leader of a gang of criminals who have defeated many martial arts figures. Ki Jabrik's gang has oppressed many people and not a single warrior dares to face Ki Jabrik and his gang. Can Jaka Someh face Ki Jabrik and his gang who are known to be powerful and cruel?

This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. The second part of the book explores how forces of globalisation have impacted upon the local and, linguistically surprisingly, rather homogeneous cultural productions of Indonesia. The main strands of inquiry in this second section are topics of global trends in religion, responses to urban development, the impact of popular literary developments, and how traditions are revisited in order to come to terms with international cultural developments.

This book explores Indonesian cinema, focusing on moments of unique creativity by Indonesian film artists who illuminate important but less-widely-known aspects of their multi-dimensional society. It begins by exploring early 1950s ‘Indonesian neorealist films’ of the Perfini group, which depict the ethos and emerging moral issues of the period of struggle for independence (1945–49). It continues by discussing four audacious political allegories produced in four discrete political eras—including the Sukarno, Suharto and Reformasi periods. It also surveys the main approaches to Islam in both popular cinema and auteur films during the Suharto New Order. One chapter celebrates the popular songs and B-movies of the Betawi comedian, Benyamin S, which dramatize the experience of the poor in ‘modernizing’ Jakarta. Another examines persisting Third World dimensions of Indonesian society as critiqued in two experimental features. The concluding chapter highlights innovation in a renewed Indonesian cinema of the post-Suharto Reformasi period (1999–2020), including films by an unprecedented generation of women writer-directors

Author Sheikh Shamsuddin, who has studied Gayong for 25 years, introduces this little-known practice to Western readers in this first book on the subject in English. The most comprehensive study in any language on Gayong and its customs, The Malay Art of Self-Defense explores in depth the system, techniques, crucial elements, and philosophies involved. Also covered are the art's history, profiles of the most notable practitioners, and an informative Q&A collected from various martial art practitioners to expand readers' knowledge and appreciation. Included are photos of Gayong demonstrations, traditional training centers, customs, and events.

The effort O'ong Maryono has made to compile a book on the development of pencak silat, is, in itself, commendable. This integrated presentation provides for a better and more comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of pencak silat. As well as discussing the historical aspects of pencak silat, O'ong Maryono also examines current issues in pencak silat. In other words, a retrospective and prospective view of pencak silat. I hope that this book will be widely read, and provide a 'lively' and substantial critical analysis that will improve the quality of discourse on pencak silat as a whole. Edy Sedyawati Director General of Culture Department of Education and Culture This book is quite unique. Unique in the literal sense: there is no other like it. It is quite a remarkable fact that although frequent reference is made to pencak silat in various contexts, and it even constitutes a specific type of literature and category of film that relate the heroic stories of its masters, never before has a writer attempted to gather comprehensive information about this 'art of self defence'. Therefore, this book by O'ong Maryono could be said to be uncontested. And herein lies its second uniqueness: this encyclopedic book was written not by a graduate in the peace and quiet of his study, but by an expert in silat in the frenzy of the contest arena. This compelling volume explores how war magic and warrior religion unleash the power of the gods, demons, ghosts, and the dead. Documenting war magic and warrior religion as they are performed in diverse cultures and across historical time periods, this volume foregrounds embodiment, practice, and performance in anthropological approaches to magic, sorcery, shamanism, and religion. The authors go beyond what magic ‘represents’ to consider what magic does. From Chinese exorcists, Javanese spirit siblings, and black magic in Sumatra to Tamil Tiger suicide bombers, Chamorro spiritual re-enchantment, tantric Buddhist war magic, and Yanomami dark shamans, religion and magic are re-evaluated not just from the practitioner’s perspective but through the victim’s lived experience. These original investigations reveal a nuanced approach to understanding social action, innovation, and the revitalization of tradition in colonial and post-colonial societies undergoing rapid social transformation.
