My autobiography, 'It's my party, I'll cry if I want to', is a personal account of trauma, mental illness, treatment and recovery. The story starts with me, aged 13, when I was brutally raped at an adventure weekend. It follows with my experience of emergency medical and police intervention, which failed to reach a conviction, solely because I became too unwell to give evidence and attend a trial. This lack of resolution and injustice left me with a severe case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which quickly developed into Psychotic illness. I describe how the trauma I suffered turned my world into turmoil and how I was affected, and in particular, my mental health. A number of evocative scenes describe in detail my battle with self-harm and also delves into my mind during severe psychotic episodes, including one which lead to me being detained in Police custody for my own safety. The story follows me through school, through my GCSE's and A levels, through my undergraduate degree at university, through four psychiatric inpatient admissions and through my continued treatment within the community. My battle against mental illness is explored and my experiences as a mental health service user, many of which failed me, are highlighted. Intertwined with my own story are my interpretations of the stories of other 'mad campers' who I met along my journey with mental illness. Between the horrors of my experiences are flashes of humour, happiness and hope. The story ends with me, aged 21, at the celebration of my birthday: an occasion I, and others, thought we'd never see.

There is a serious lack of conservative books with a sense of humor. This book fills that gap. I’ve always hated the assumption that Democrats and big unions represent the average working man. Wrong. As a carpenter, I demand the freedom to keep more of my own money to help my OWN family, rather than see the government steal it, waste it, and give a little bit back in the name of “caring.” I’m trying to create a future for myself, but the government is trying to create dependency. And they are doing it with MY MONEY!

David Foster Wallace and Mark Costello's exuberant exploration of rap music and culture. Living together in Cambridge in 1989, David Foster Wallace and longtime friend Mark Costello discovered that they shared "an uncomfortable, somewhat furtive, and distinctively white enthusiasm for a certain music called rap/hip-hop." The book they wrote together, set against the legendary Boston music scene, mapped the bipolarities of rap and pop, rebellion and acceptance, glitz and gangsterdom. Signifying Rappers issued a fan's challenge to the giants of rock writing, Greil Marcus, Robert Palmer, and Lester Bangs: Could the new street beats of 1989 set us free, as rock had always promised? Back in print at last, Signifying Rappers is a rare record of a city and a summer by two great thinkers, writers, and friends. With a new foreword by Mark Costello on his experience writing with David Foster Wallace, this rerelease cannot be missed.

Margaret Tuttle's story is one of love unsought, for she had been perfectly content with the well-ordered and conveniently predictable life she had arranged for herself. But something dark lurks beneath the surface of her placid and uncluttered being, something dusty with neglect, yet painful to the touch. Birdie Freeman is everything Margaret is not: homely, humble, and generous. It is Birdie who manages, through nothing but acts of love, to dredge up Margaret's memories of things better left buried. Then Margaret discovers that Birdie harbors secrets of her own. "This book reminds me of why I love to read."--Michelle Collings, Editor, Doubleday/Crossings Book Club

It's the most famous highway in the world - find out, or remember, why. Tens of thousands of travelers from around the world spend millions of dollars every year trying to recapture the aura of a simpler time. When gasoline can top $4 a gallon and Route 66 is, in many ways, a shell of its former glory, what keeps them coming? Author Bob Boze Bell, a lifelong resident of Kingman, Arizona (one of the quintessential Route 66 towns), has accumulated a unique sense of the Mother Road's history, not to mention friendships with folks from Kingman and other Route 66 communities. In The 66 Kid--part autobiography, part narrative history, part oral history - Bell offers a highly illustrated account of the world's most famous highway full of the author's personal observations and recollections, and exciting first-person accounts from people who lived, worked, and played along the road. Bell digs deep into the roots of the Route 66, offering insights into the people who made it run: from the neon-lit motels to the greasy-spoon diners, and even the shady roadside attractions. Illustrated with period postcards and photos, as well as the author's own maps and art created for this project, The 66 Kid proves that you can still get your kicks on Route 66.

There is no soul that lives on past the death of the body, no reincarnation, no life after death. Most religions today are outdated, and their teachings can no longer be logically sustained. Fear of death and what is to become of us after we die has motivated humans to create stories and belief systems that do not stand up to rational argument. The universe is eternal, but a single human’s place in it is not. First Person Singular replaces the need to believe in a God that can be explained into nonexistence. This book perspective has been crafted to help us confront the reality of our mortality. The First Person Singular—“I”—will always exist. By examining issues of religion, history, biology, astrophysics, and philosophy, the author explains how religions cannot be defended as offering a promise of eternal life or reincarnation. Human lives, however remarkable, are but trivial in the scope of evolution and the universe. First Person Singular offers assurance that “I” will live as long as the last human being is alive on Earth.
