The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility uses the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) technique to produce rare-isotope beams (RIB). The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, a mass separator, and beam transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix to the surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities. The Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility located at the TRIUMF laboratory in Vancouver, Canada, is one of the world's most advanced ISOL-type radioactive ion beam facilities. An extensive {gamma}-ray spectroscopy program at ISAC is centered around two major research facilities: (1) the 8{pi} {gamma}-ray spectrometer for {beta}-delayed {gamma}-ray spectroscopy experiments with the low-energy beams from ISAC-I, and (2) the next-generation TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS) for in-beam experiments with the accelerated radioactive ion beams. An overview of these facilities and recent results from the diverse program of nuclear structure and fundamental interaction studies they support is presented.

Development of a facility combining an isotope-separator-on-line (ISOL) with a post-accelerator, to produce energetic ion beams far from the valley of nuclear stability, was originally proposed for installation on one of the beam lines of the TRIUMF cyclotron about ten years ago. A test facility (TISOL) consisting of a target, ion source, and mass separator, but without a post accelerator, was subsequently installed and has been in use to support an experimental program and to aid in development of target/ion source systems. The facility is currently being augmented with the addition of a laser neutral atom trap for a proposed series of[beta] decay and atomic parity non-conservation experiments, using selected radioactive alkali isotopes, to test some symmetry properties of the Standard Model. In addition, work has begun on a new upgraded facility consisting of remotely handleable target/ion source assemblies, a new mass separator with resolution m/[Delta]m= 10,000, and post-acceleration to 1.5 MeV/u, for ions with A[le] 30.

The TRIUMF/ISAC facility, now a world leader in rare isotope production and acceleration, is constructing ISAC-II [1, 2], that will allow the acceleration of ion beams with 3 (less-than or equal to) A/q (less-than or equal to) 7 to an energy of at least 6.5 MeV/u for masses up to 150. The upgrade will include the addition of a superconducting heavy-ion linac delivering an effective voltage of 43 MV. The first order design of the new transfer lines and post-accelerator have been optimized to provide simultaneous acceleration of several charge states (multicharge). The quarter wave resonators providing the acceleration have inherent rf electric and magnetic asymmetric components that complicate multi-charge acceleration and can lead to transverse emittance growth. In particular we report the realistic field simulations of the medium beta section of the SC-DTL for multi-charge acceleration.

The Third International Conference on Isotopes focused on the theme of ?Isotope Production and Applications in the 21st Century? and included presentations by several eminent experts in this field. The three central subjects ? Isotopes in Medicine, Industry and the Environment ? were supplemented by presentations on the latest developments in isotope production and synthesis, research into radiopharmaceuticals, applications in agriculture, analytical applications, radiocarbon dating, AMS and PET. Various views on the future directions for producers and users of isotopes were considered at this multi-disciplinary meeting.

A comprehensive, unified treatment of present-day nuclear physics-the fresh edition of a classic text/reference. "A fine and thoroughly up-to-date textbook on nuclear physics . . . most welcome." -Physics Today (on the First Edition). What sets Introductory Nuclear Physics apart from other books on the subject is its presentation of nuclear physics as an integral part of modern physics. Placing the discipline within a broad historical and scientific context, it makes important connections to other fields such as elementary particle physics and astrophysics. Now fully revised and updated, this Second Edition explores the changing directions in nuclear physics, emphasizing new developments and current research-from superdeformation to quark-gluon plasma. Author Samuel S.M. Wong preserves those areas that established the First Edition as a standard text in university physics departments, focusing on what is exciting about the discipline and providing a concise, thorough, and accessible treatment of the fundamental aspects of nuclear properties. In this new edition, Professor Wong: * Includes a chapter on heavy-ion reactions-from high-spin states to quark-gluon plasma * Adds a new chapter on nuclear astrophysics * Relates observed nuclear properties to the underlying nuclear interaction and the symmetry principles governing subatomic particles * Regroups material and appendices to make the text easier to use * Lists Internet links to essential databases and research projects * Features end-of-chapter exercises using real-world data. Introductory Nuclear Physics, Second Edition is an ideal text for courses in nuclear physics at the senior undergraduate or first-year graduate level. It is also an important resource for scientists and engineers working with nuclei, for astrophysicists and particle physicists, and for anyone wishing to learn more about trends in the field.
