This text presents the proceedings of a conference on intelligent autonomous systems. Papers contribute solutions to the task of designing autonomous systems that are capable of operating independently of a human in partially structured and unstructured environments. For specific application, these systems should also learn from their actions in order to improve and optimize planning and execution of new tasks.

ISRR, the "International Symposium on Robotics Research", is one of robotics pioneering Symposia, which has established over the past two decades some of the field's most fundamental and lasting contributions. This book presents the results of the eighteenth edition of "Robotics Research" ISRR17, offering a collection of a broad range of topics in robotics. This symposium took place in Puerto Varas, Chile from December 11th to December 14th, 2017. The content of the contributions provides a wide coverage of the current state of robotics research, the advances and challenges in its theoretical foundation and technology basis, and the developments in its traditional and new emerging areas of applications. The diversity, novelty, and span of the work unfolding in these areas reveal the field's increased maturity and expanded scope and define the state of the art of robotics and its future direction.

The Eighth International Symposium of Robotics Research was held in Kanagawa, Japan, on October 4-7 1997; Robotics Research presents the findings of this symposium. The papers, written by international specialists in the field, cover the many topics concerning advanced robotics today, ranging from practical system design to theoretical reasoning and planning. They assess the state of the field and discuss all the current and emerging trends dealing with, amongst many other topics, mobile robotics, manufacturing, learning from humans, autonomous land vehicles, humanoid robots, future robots, and new components. The reader will share with the attendees the meaningful steps forward in building the emerging body of concepts, methods, scientific and technical knowledge that shape modern day robotics.

Research in Computer and Robot Vision is directed toward researchers and graduate students in the field of computer vision. A broad spectrum of recent research is presented including sensing and navigation for mobile robots, the extraction of lines, curves, surfaces, and skeletons from intensity images and range images, human motion, and feature extraction. Three applied research projects are presented on the topics of handwriting recognition, automatic understanding of technical drawings, and the collection and interpretation of 3-D images for use in dentistry. These papers dramatically illustrate the breadth of implications of the use of computer vision in industrial, social, and even medical arenas.

The Fifth International Symposium on Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems (DARS 2000) dealt with new strategies to realize complex, modular, robust, and fault-tolerant robotic systems. Technologies, algorithms, and system architectures for distributed autonomous robotic systems were presented and discussed during the meeting. DARS 2000 was truly an international event, with participants represent ing eleven countries from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. All of the papers in this volume were presented at DARS 2000, and were selected on the basis of peer re views to ensure quality and relevance. These papers have the common goal of con tributing solutions to realize robust and intelligent multirobot systems. The topics of the symposium address a wide range of issues that are important in the development of decentralized robotic systems. These topics include architec tures, communication, biological inspirations, reconfigurable robots, localization, exploration and mapping, distributed sensing, multi robot motion coordination, tar get assignment and tracking, multirobot learning, and cooperative object transport. DARS clearly requires a broad area of interdisciplinary technologies related not only to robotics and computer engineering, but also to biology and psychology. The DARS symposium is the leading established conference on distributed au tonomous systems. The First, Second, and Third International Symposia on Distrib uted Autonomous Robotic Systems (DARS '92, DARS '94, and DARS '96) were held at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Saitama, Japan.
